Pennsylvania: GOP State Rep. Mike Fleck comes out

Pennslyvania Republican State Rep. Mike Fleck comes out

Pennsylvania state Rep. Mike Fleck came out yesterday, one year after separating from his wife. Fleck now becomes the nation’s only openly gay Republican state legislator. Via Politics PA:

In a deeply personal story by the Huntingdon Daily News (subscription), Fleck, a devout Christian, explained the difficult road to his announcement. “Coming out is hard enough, but doing it in the public eye is definitely something I never anticipated,” he said. “I’m still the exact same person and I’m still a Republican and, most importantly, I’m still a person of faith trying to live life as a servant of God and the public. The only difference now is that I will also be doing so as honestly as I know how.”

He said his party affiliation remains strong. “The Republican party is all about the government needing to stay out of people’s lives,” Fleck said. “I’m not a one-issue person and it’s not a one-issue party.” Fleck, 39, has a resume that would impress Republicans anywhere. An Eagle Scout by age 18, he graduated from Liberty University in 1995 and worked professionally for the Boy Scouts of America as a district executive in Huntingdon County from 1999 to 2004.

Fleck also said that he tried religious therapy to rid himself of same-sex desires, but to no avail. “I sought out treatment from a Christian counselor, but when that didn’t work out, I engaged a secular therapist who told me point blank that I was gay and that I was too caught up in being the perfect Christian rather than actually being authentic and honest,” he said.

As for his ex-wife, Fleck said she remains his best-friend. “My wife and I became closer than ever [after I came out to her], but it was bittersweet as we both concluded that the marriage was over,” he said.

The above-linked story notes that Fleck has not yet had to vote on any LGBT-related issues.

Last month Democrat Brian Sims was elected as Pennsylvania’s first openly gay legislator.

An Autistic High School Football Kicker Leads His Team To Victory

I love hearing stories like this.

My older brother is mildly autistic, and growing up his challenges weren’t identified.

It’s only in the last few years I was able to have him diagnosed and with that knowledge, it’s a bit easier to know how to help him.

Autism Spectrum Disorder covers a range of issues, many that only present in social ways.

My brother loved going to our high school football games. Other students at the time sometimes found his devotion to school spirit odd or unusual. It was difficult to for him to relate to them, and being teenagers, some often weren’t very kind. He would go to a local park and practice kicking a football for hours. I think he would have loved to have been a part of a team like Anthony is in New Jersey.

Watching Anthony Starego realize a way to be a part of something he loves is amazing.

This made my day.

Maryland: Same-sex couples can marry Jan. 1, 2013

Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler

Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler said on Thursday same-sex couples can begin to marry in the state on Jan. 1.

He wrote in a 19-page opinion that clerks can begin to issue marriage licenses to gays and lesbians as soon as Dec. 6, as long as they don’t take effect until the same-sex marriage law takes effect at the start of the new year. A 1999 law states a marriage license is not valid until 6 a.m. on the second calendar day after a clerk issues it.

Gansler concluded this requirement does not “expressly prohibit licenses becoming effective after that time.”

“Although there is a legal reason why same-sex couples cannot be licensed to marry before midnight on Jan. 1, 2013…, there is no such legal reason why they should not be licensed to marry at any time after the moment the law takes effect,” he wrote.

The same-sex marriage law voters approved by a 52-48 percent margin earlier this month is scheduled to take effect on a legal holiday when clerks’ offices are typically closed. It was previously believed the earliest a same-sex couple would have been able to legally marry under Maryland law was 6 a.m. on Jan. 4.

BREAKING: SCOTUS lists no gay marriage on upcoming cases

Just announced on MSNBC – the US Supreme Court has not listed any of the current gay marriage cases presented for appeal.

There may be news on Monday, but after high expectations that word would arrive today, there is no news.  The justices are next schedule to meet in conference to consider new cases on Dec. 7.

This is kind of a head-scratcher in that everyone was expecting some kind of news regarding Prop 8 in California and the many DOMA appeals submitted for consideration by SCOTUS.
