Boise City Council unanimously passes LGBT non-discrimination protections

Boise, Idaho’s City Council took a big step forward last night, passing an ordinance protecting LGBT people from discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodation before a packed house that rose to gave it a standing ovation when the vote was over.

Writes the Statesman:

Following unanimous passage of the ordinance, the standing-room-only crowd in the State Capitol’s west wing auditorium stood and cheered. Jordan and fellow councilwoman Lauren McLean, who spearheaded the effort to draft the ordinance, said it is something Boise has lacked and will help the city’s standing with companies considering whether to open new establishments here. Churches, private organizations such as The Boy Scouts of America and other governments operating in the city are exempt from the law, which takes effect Jan. 1.

Activists are now working towards a statewide bill.

California: “Ex-gay” therapy ban will now move forward

A law barring so-called conversion therapy for people younger than 18 will still go into effect Jan. 1, 2013, across California after a federal judge denied a request to postpone the law’s official start date.

Judge Kimberly Mueller’s ruling follows Monday’s decision by Judge William B. Schubb, both of whom are from the U.S. district court for the Eastern District of California. Schubb’s decision exempted three therapists from adhering to the law, while Mueller’s decision ensures that the law goes into effect starting January 1, 2013 for all other practitioners.

The attempted injunction was raised by the National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality, represented by the antigay legal group, the Liberty Counsel.

Atlanta City Council passes resolution supporting marriage equality

Atlanta’s City Council approved a resolution Monday night to support marriage equality, countering Mayor Kasim Reed’s previously stated opposition to extending marriage rights to same-sex couples.

Project Q Atlanta reports:

Gay Atlanta City Council member Alex Wan quietly introduced a resolution supporting gay marriage on Monday. It passed. However, don’t tell marriage equality wet blanket Mayor Kasim Reed.

Wan developed the resolution out of the public eye, consulting with Georgia Equality and other activists to develop it and present it to the council. But after the vote, Wan announced its passage on Facebook:

“Proud to share with everyone that the Atlanta City Council just passed a resolution supporting marriage equality!!!”

Mayor Reed refuses to publicly back marriage equality, though he will support the right of the Council to pass a resolution.

His office issued a brief statement to the GA Voice after the vote on Monday. “Mayor Reed respects the decision of the Atlanta City Council in passing a resolution supporting marriage equality.”
