Mexican Supreme Court strikes down ban on same-sex marriage
In what activists are hailing as a landmark ruling, today the Mexican Supreme Court struck down the ban on same-sex marriage:
The court ruled on behalf of three same-sex couple seeking to marry in the southern state of Oaxaca. The court had already ruled in 2010 that gay marriages performed under a Mexico City ordinance had to be recognized nationwide. With this precedent, the remaining bans on gay marriage in most Mexican states could quickly fall.
This ruling does not immediately eliminate marriage statutes limiting unions to a man and a woman—the Mexican Supreme Court doesn’t have the power to strike down state laws like that en mass as the United States Supreme Court does. But the lawyer who brought the case, Alex Alí Méndez Díaz, said before the ruling that victory would mean the beginning of the end for bans on same-sex marriage.
The court’s ruling that the ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutionally discriminatory is partly based on a February ruling from the Inter-American Court of Human Rights that governments can’t discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation, Karen Atala Riffo y Niñas v. Chile.

Chris Kluwe and Brendon Ayanbadejo named “Honorary Gays of the Year” by GQ Magazine
The Vikings punter and the Ravens linebacker offer GQ a joint interview about gay players in the NFL and the moment this year when Maryland lawmaker Emmett C. Burns came after Ayanbadejo’s gay rights advocacy and got tackled by Kluwe:
Kluwe: The first player to come out is going to face unprecedented media scrutiny. It’ll be historic. It’s gonna have to be someone tough enough to deal with the distractions. And hopefully he’ll know that not just me and Brendon but other players support him.
Marriage equality advances in Colombian Senate vote
A Colombian Senate committee has approved a marriage equality measure, advancing it for further consideration, On Top reports:
With a 10-5 vote, the First Committee (Comision Primera) has approved Senator Armando Benedetti’s proposed measure. Benedetti’s proposal originally sought to create civil unions for gay and lesbian couples. He has since altered the language to marriage. However, Benedetti’s bill would not give married gay couples the right to adopt children.
Tuesday’s vote is the first of four needed for the measure to become law.
“In this country homosexuals already have economic rights and social security, therefore it is time to move toward matrimony,” Benedetti is quoted as saying by El Espectador.
In July 2011, Colombia’s Constitutional Court ruled that the legislature must pass a same-sex marriage bill within two years or the courts will legalize it.
Perfect Beautiful Muscle Alpha Male
A friend posted this on Facebook and I found it fascinating in a weird way.
The guy in the video – who shot it and posted it on YouTube entitled “Perfect Beautiful Muscle Alpha Male” – has posted lots of short videos in praise of himself. He has titled some of the other selections “Gorgeous Muscle Stud Cam,” “Extra Large Gorgeous Muscle” and “Muscle God Eats Steak.”
He’s a good looking guy. I just find it interesting that he makes these videos worshiping himself.
Minneapolis swears in first openly lesbian chief of police
Yesterday Minneapolis swore in its first openly lesbian chief of police:
Janeé Harteau was sworn in as the city’s 52nd police chief on Thursday before a crowd of 300 people in the rotunda of Minneapolis City Hall, as Sgt. Holly Keegel, whom she introduced as her “life partner,” and their 13-year-old daughter, Lauren, stood by her side.
“I will always stand up and do what is right, even if I stand alone,” she said in a speech, following the swearing-in ceremony. “There are incredibly high expections for me and there should be.”
Seated and standing, the crowd included City Council members, police chiefs from a number of Minnesota cities, Minneapolis police officers and other city employees.
