NYC: “Tawny, Tell Me True” by David Drake

Tonight, January 12th, in TAWNY, TELL ME TRUE, Obie Award-winning playwright/performer David Drake (The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me) will bring his latest theatrical creation Tawny Heatherton back to the stage of midtown Manhattan’s Laurie Beechman Theatre, where the legendary starlet made a critically acclaimed debut last winter in MY TAWNY VALENTINE.

As directed by Robert La Fosse, with musical direction by Lance Cruce, TAWNY, TELL ME TRUE is an evening of songs and stories where Tawny discovers the meaning of the dawning of the Age of Aquarius. Along the way — with videos by Ned Stresen-Reuter, and original music by Trevor Kuprel — our loveably eccentric showbiz survivor and “one hit wonder” of the disco zeitgeist of the 1980s recalls such indelible moments in her globe-trotting journey as her stint as a HEE HAW Honey, her unexpected tryst in Hollywood with Burt and Loni (as well as that unusual encounter with Joan Van Ark on the set of KNOT’S LANDING), and Tawny’s ongoing quest to reunite with her long-lost aunt Joey, whom she last saw in the parking lot of the Mohegan Sun Casino. And of course, her abduction by aliens.

TAWNY, TELL ME TRUE performs on Saturdays at 7:30pm on January 12th, 19th & 26th, 2013. The Laurie Beechman Theatre, downstairs at the West Bank Cafe, 407 West 42nd Street (at 9th Avenue). For more info call: 212-695-6909.

Tickets are $20 and available at https://web.ovationtix.com/trs/cal/495

New poll: Fewer Americans see homosexuality as a sin

There’s been a substantial drop in the proportion of Americans who think being gay is a sin, according to a new poll.

The poll, from Nashville-based LifeWay Research, a Christian-oriented firm, showed 37% of respondents saying “homosexual behavior” is a sin, down from 44% in a September 2011 survey. That’s a statistically significant difference, say LifeWay pollsters, who conducted their latest study in November and released the results Thursday.

In the new poll, 45% of respondents said homosexuality is not a sin, up from 43% in 2011, and 17% said they don’t know, up from 13% in the previous study.

Edith Windsor, the face of marriage equality fight

Photographs by Macey J. Foronda for BuzzFeed

Chris Geidner at Buzzfeed has a fantastic interview with Edith Windsor, whose court case against DOMA will be heard by SCOTUS in March.

Her story is inspiring to read as she describes the journey of realizing she was lesbian, meeting her future wife Thea Spyer and now being the face of the marriage equality fight.

Just a snippet:

“I certainly did not want to be queer,” she says, looking off to the side of the room while talking about an era when President Eisenhower added “sexual perversion” to the possible grounds for dismissal from public service. “There was no way. I could not imagine a life that way. I wanted to be like everybody else. You marry a man who supports you — it never occurred to me I’d have to earn a living, and nor did I study to earn a living.”

What would a queer life have been?

“I had no idea what that life would have been, except underground. And denigrated. I didn’t think there was anything inferior about me, but I knew that a lot of my friends would think that if they knew. And I lied all the time. My big sister knew, and ultimately became very homophobic. It was a hidden world. And Philadelphia didn’t have much of that hidden world, to my knowledge.”

Rhode Island: Governor says “pass marriage equality now”

Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee has issued a statement that he will likely veto any attempt to put same-sex marriage to a public vote.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee told reporters Thursday that lawmakers owe it to voters to decide themselves. The state House of Representatives is expected to vote within weeks on legislation that would allow gay and lesbian couples to wed. But some opponents have voiced support for alternative legislation that would put the question before voters. Same-sex marriage supporters say the issue is one of civil rights and shouldn’t be decided by a vote. Rhode Island is now the only state in New England without same-sex marriage.

Through a White House spokesman, President Obama has endorsed marriage equality in Rhode Island.

“While the President does not weigh in on every measure being considered by the states, he believes all couples should be treated fairly and equally, with dignity and respect,” said White House spokesperson Shin Inouye. “As he has said, his personal view is that it’s wrong to prevent couples who are in loving, committed relationships, and want to marry, from doing so.”

Rep. Barney Frank endorses Rep. Ed Markey for MA Senate seat

While Barney Frank has clearly stated he’d like to be the interim Senator from Massachusetts (should John Kerry become Sec. of State), he’s now endorsed MA Rep. Ed Markey for the special election that would take place:

Markey was the first candidate to announce that he is running in the special election. Frank’s endorsement comes days after Kerry, Victoria Kennedy, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and other Democratic groups announced that they are backing Markey, in an apparent attempt to coalesce around one Democratic nominee and avoid a contentious primary. However, not all Democrats are ready to unite around Markey. U.S. Reps. Michael Capuano of Somerville and Stephen Lynch of South Boston and state Sen. Benjamin Downing of Pittsfield are all still considering running.
