Jodie Foster comes out at the Golden Globes

After receiving the Cecil B. DeMille Award for the many acclaimed films she has made over four decades, a clearly nervous Foster first toyed with the audience a little, dancing around the issue before affirming that, yes, she is a lesbian.

“I’m gonna put it out there, loud and proud, right?” she coyly said. “I’m gonna need your support on this. I am single… I already did my coming out about 1,000 years ago, back in the stone age.”

Well aware that people have been waiting for this moment for years, Foster explained that her delay wasn’t based in shame, but in the fact that she came of age when there was a larger premium on privacy.

She was not of the era when gay or lesbian stars held press conferences to discuss their private lives, she said. But, standing up on that stage, poised and proud, Foster finally publicly came out. And I couldn’t be more happy for her!

Behind the amazing visual effects of THE AVENGERS

It might be the only Oscar the action film wins, but I think THE AVENGERS has the Visual Effects Oscar in the bag.

Take a look at the submission reel from Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) highlighting their work on the film. From building the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier to the creating the look of the Hulk, the effects powerhouse makes a strong case for why they should be bringing the award home.

Paris: Thousands gather to protest same-sex marriage in France

Thousands of protesters marched through the streets of Paris today in opposition to the same-sex marriage bill proposed by President Francois Hollande and his Socialist Party.

Organisers reserved five high-speed trains and 900 buses to bring protesters from provincial towns to the capital, some before dawn, to join Parisians and display the extent of the opposition that has built up in recent weeks. “Nobody expected this two or three months ago,” said Frigide Barjot, a flamboyant comedian leading the “Demo for All” she described as “multicultural, multireligious and multisexual.” Strongly backed by the Catholic hierarchy, lay activists have mobilised a coalition of church-going families, political conservatives, Muslims, evangelicals and even homosexuals opposed to gay marriage. “We want this draft law to be withdrawn,” Patricia Soullier, a protest organiser, told BFM-TV before boarding a Paris-bound train in Montpellier in the south of France. Hollande angered opponents of same-sex marriage by trying to avoid public debate on the reform, which Justice Minister Christiane Taubira described as “a change in civilisation”, and wavering about some of its details.

Reports vary in terms of the number of protesters that took part, with some press accounts estimating the crowd “in the tens of thousands” while the organizers say more than 800,000.

Britney Spears quits X Factor and fiance

Britney Spears has given her notice to both her day job and her boyfriend.

According to TVGuide.com, Britney will not be returning to THE X FACTOR, having served as judge for just one season.

“I’ve made the very difficult decision not to return for another season,” she said in a statement Friday. “I had an incredible time doing the show and I love the other judges and I am so proud of my teens but it’s time for me to get back in the studio. Watching them all do their thing up on that stage every week made me miss performing so much!  I can’t wait to get back out there and do what I love most.”

Sources previously told TVGuide.com that she did so because she knew she was going to be fired.

Spears was paid $15 million to appear as a judge on the show. Word is the singer is currently recording her eighth album, and may be in talks to headline her own show in Las Vegas.

“She is very interested in a Vegas residency, and is in serious talks with one of the major casino groups,” a source close to Spears told TVGuide.com Friday.

On the personal side of her life, Britney and fiance Jason Trawick have called it quits.

“Britney Spears and Jason Trawick have mutually agreed to end their one-year engagement,” her rep Jeff Raymond tells PEOPLE. “As two mature adults, they came to the difficult decision to go their separate ways while continuing to remain friends.”
