Poll: 85% of Americans support background checks for ALL gun sales

According to a Pew Research Center poll, 85% of the public backs making private gun sales and purchases at gun shows subject to background checks, with comparable support across party lines. Other results from the poll:

• 80% favor laws to prevent mentally ill people from purchasing guns, with broad support from Democrats, Republicans and independent voters.

• 67% support creating a federal database to track gun sales, but there’s a partisan divide, with 84% of Democrats and only 49% of Republicans favoring the proposal.

• 55% favor a ban on assault style weapons, 54% back a ban on high capacity ammunition clips, and 53% support a ban on on-line ammunition sales, but again there’s a wide partisan divide between Democrats and Republicans on these proposals.

• 64% support putting armed security guards or police in more schools, but only four in ten say arming more teachers and school officials with guns is a good idea.

• 51% of Americans say it’s more important to control gun ownership than to protect gun rights. This is virtually unchanged from Pew poll that was conducted in the days following the Newtown, Connecticut shootings.

Parking lots do double-duty to create solar power

Every parking lot ought to look like this. It looks good, it protects the cars from the elements, it would create 10’s of thousands of jobs and would move us towards energy efficiency.

From The Rationalist: Parking structure shades the cars while producing free energy.

Germany has created over 500,000 new jobs by pushing hard into solar and wind energy – providing incentives for everyone to install and as a result, they will be able to move forward with their plans to shut down all their nuclear power plants in the next decade.

NOM chair Jon Eastman has the sadz that National Cathedral will allow same-sex marriages

NOM Chair John Eastman calls the Episcopal Church “cavalier” for allowing same-sex marriages at the National Cathedral.

Says Eastman: “The step that [the National Cathedral] has taken… is directly in violation of international Anglican law and the Book of Common Prayer. So they can do this if they want but redefining marriage to be something it was never understood to be is going to have dramatic consequences both in this country and in their church… They should realize that their own doctrine says this is not proper.”

Lawyer associated with anti-gay Alliance Defense Fund

Back in November, Towleroad reported that Lisa Biron, a lawyer associated with Alliance Defending Freedom (better known as the Alliance Defense Fund, an anti-gay Christian law group) was arrested on child pornography charges for videotaping her 14-year-old daughter having sex with two men on separate occasions.

Biron was found guilty last Thursday:

Lisa Biron, 43, of Manchester faces a minimum sentence of 25 years in prison after a jury convicted her yesterday. The jury deliberated for less than an hour.

Biron, arrested by the FBI last November, was accused of eight felony counts involving the videotaping of men having sex with a 14-year-old girl who was identified by the Associated Press as her daughter. She also allegedly made a cellphone video of herself having sex with her daughter.

Biron, who claimed on her Facebook page (which was taken down, according to the Concord Monitor) that the Bible was her favorite book, had worked with Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), formerly the Alliance Defense Fund, in defending a Pentecostal church in Concord in a tax fight against the city.

Alliance Defending Freedom has scrubbed all references to Biron from their website and Facebook page.

Marriage News Watch – January 14, 2013

Clip description: “Big news coming this week from Rhode Island, where we may see the year’s first hearing on marriage equality. New lawmakers in Illinois and Colorado express eagerness to pass marriage and civil unions bills. Two lawsuits join forces in Hawaii and Nevada, plus one unlikely country that saw support for marriage double over the last decade.”

Audra McDonald to host 7 broadcasts of “Live From Lincoln Center”

Winner of five Tony Awards and two Grammy Awards will host seven broadcasts of “Live From Lincoln Center.”

I got to meet Audra during her first Broadway show – Carousel, which was playing at Lincoln Center – and she was as charming and connected as you would wish.

She still is. And damn if she doesn’t make everything look easy. And we all know that it’s not.

You have to be happy for her and everything that comes her way.

White House responds to petition to build a Death Star

photo via TruthAboutBills.com

When a petition is submitted to the White House with at least 25,000 signatures – for action on anything – the White House is required to respond.

Recently a group of folks collected signatures to ask the White House to consider building a Death Star. Yes, like the one in the Star Wars movies. Since they got more than 25,000 signatures, the White House responded. With a good amount of humor I might add:

The Administration shares your desire for job creation and a strong national defense, but a Death Star isn’t on the horizon. Here are a few reasons:

  • The construction of the Death Star has been estimated to cost more than $850,000,000,000,000,000. We’re working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it.
  • The Administration does not support blowing up planets.
  • Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?

Click here to read the rest. Glad to know the White House has a sense of humor…

Illinois: Business leaders and corporations show support for same-sex marriage

Dozens of Illinois business leaders and corporations are throwing their support behind a marriage equality bill expected to be addressed by the state legislature at the beginning of February, the Chicago Tribune reports:

In addition to Google, Orbitz Worldwide and Groupon, individual signers of the letter include Desiree Rogers, CEO of Johnson Publishing Co.; Lance Chody, CEO of Garrett Popcorn Shops; Fred Eychaner, chairman of the Newsweb Corp.; and Laura Ricketts, co-owner of the Chicago Cubs. Eychaner and Ricketts are openly gay executives who are helping fund the statewide push for same-sex marriage, the Tribune has reported.

The letter closes with this: “Illinois simply cannot afford to be less competitive than other states.”
