Trump Policy Proposal Would Cost HIV+ Americans At The Pharmacy

A new policy proposal from the Trump administration could affect a lot of LGBTQ Americans in terms of healthcare and their wallets. The Washington Blade reports the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services issued a draft rule last month that would allow insurance companies to ignore ‘co-pay coupons’ for prescription drugs in regard to computing a patient’s out-of-pocket spending. In the past, insurance companies have allowed copay coupons (which reduce prices at checkout) to count towards a patient’s deductible and out-of-pocket limits. For instance, if you are a gay man who takes PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) as protection against HIV infection, you may be acquainted with Gilead’s Advancing Access co-pay coupon card which pays up to $7,200 annually towards your copay and/or deductible if you have health insurance. As many have found, when used to cover your PrEP prescription, within one or two months many patients find their deductible or out-of-pocket maximums have been met because the co-pay coupon counts towards those limits. From that point on, you might have low or zero out-of-pocket medical expenses. But if the proposed rule is adopted, insurance companies could block those coupon payments from being applied towards a patient’s deductible and out-of-pocket maximums – even though the insurance company isn’t having to pay. Why does an insurance company care where the funds come from as long as the bill gets paid??? In those cases, you would have to pay much more in regard to out-of-pocket spending before reaching your deductible. And it’s not just HIV medications in play here. The new policy could affect Americans with hepatitis B or C, who need daily medications to stay healthy in the case of hepatitis B, and for medications to cure hepatitis C which requires treatment for up to 12 weeks. Donald Trump has said in the past he wants to lower the cost of prescription drugs, but this certainly won’t do the trick. As the Blade notes, some patients with limited funds often skip a dose of medications here or there to stretch out the drugs they have. But studies have shown that missing just two days of HIV meds can increase an individual’s viral load. It’s not just HIV or hepatitis patients that could be affected. A study from the IQVIA Institute for Human Data Science shows in 2017 69 percent of insured Americans did not fill their new prescriptions when they had to pay more than $250 out of pocket. Such non-adherence leads to tens of thousands of preventable deaths each year. In the end, while Trump may profess to want to help the American people with their healthcare costs, this new policy would only favor insurance companies. Here’s hoping the new policy proposal is rejected. (source: Washington Blade)

Gay Mayor Of Wilton Manor Dies Of Brain Aneurysm

Justin Flippen, the 41-year-old  openly gay mayor of Wilton Manors, Florida, died suddenly early Tuesday night as he was driving to a meeting of the Wilton Manors City Commission. Wilton Manors Police Chief Paul O’Connell said Flippen was taken to a nearby hospital due to a serious “medical issue,” and that he was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Police Chief Paul O’Connell said Wednesday that the Medical Examiner’s Office determined Flippen died of a brain aneurysm. With his election, Wilton Manors became only the second city in the U.S. to have an entirely LGBTQ elected city government. Palm Springs was the first. Flippen was first elected to the Commission in November 2008 and then picked to serve as Vice Mayor. He also served from 2008-2010 and 2014-2018 before being elected mayor in 2018. Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg, who Flippen had endorsed for president, tweeted his condolences.

Bi Twitter Rises Up As #BisexualMenExist Trends

(images via Twitter)
Bisexual men want you to know they exist and are not ‘confused’ whether they are dating men or women. The hashtag #BisexualMenExist was trending throughout Tuesday after software engineer Vaneet Mehta tweeted he had noticed an increase in biphobia recently.

In follow-up tweets, he encouraged non-binary, pansexuals, omnisexual, polysexuals and bicurious to use the hashtag and share photos of themselves as well. In an interview with HuffPost, Mehta shared that his tweet was in response to an exchange he saw on Twitter about Netflix’s new reality show, Love Is Blind. In one installment, a couple gets into a heated argument after the guy in the relationship, Carlton, comes out as bisexual to his fiancée, Diamond. The revelation led Diamond to doubt Carlton’s sexuality. Folks on Twitter apparently sided with Diamond. “One of the main things I saw on Twitter was a poll trending asking women whether they would ever date a bi man,” Mehta told HuffPost. “Most people voted no. I also saw quite a few comments insinuating that bi men were basically gay and just lying to themselves. It was upsetting.” Mehta added that many of the conversations he was seeing on Twitter about bisexuality included comments like “it’s just a phase,” which results in bisexual erasure. “These stereotypes about bisexual people erase my identity entirely, telling me I’m not valid,” said Mehta. “And it means people feel that they couldn’t date me because I’m only going to come out or I’m still in the closet.” In fact, bisexuals make up the largest share of LGBTQ Americans. A 2013 survey of LGBTQ Americans by Pew Research showed 40% of respondents identified as bisexual, while 36% identified as gay men, 19% as lesbians and 5% as transgender. Bi men from across the Twitterverse chimed in sharing their photos and stories including actor Joshua Rush (Disney Channels’ Andi Mack) and former NFL player Ryan Russell (Dallas Cowboys, Tampa Bay Buccaneers).

New Law Could Pave The Way For Bathhouses To Return To San Francisco

District 8 Supervisor Rafael Mandelman, who represents the LGBTQ-centric Castro area in San Francisco, has introduced legislation that would lay the groundwork for allowing gay bathhouses to reopen. Back in 1984, as the AIDS epidemic was reaching a fever-pitch, San Francisco put new rules in place ordering owners to tear down individual cubicles with locks on the doors as well as having employees ‘monitor’ the sexual activities of patrons to ensure there was no unsafe sex taking place. But advancements in medical science in the decades since has changed the HIV landscape. Modern HIV medications are now capable of bringing viral loads down to undetectable making transmission of the virus nearly impossible. Plus, the advent of PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) has led to a dramatic decline in new HIV infections, especially in San Francisco. According to the Bay Area Reporter, new diagnoses of HIV dropped below 200 in 2018. District 6 Supervisor Matt Haney, whose district includes the South of Market neighborhood where most gay bathhouses were located back in the day, has expressed his support of the new legislation. Pointing to the advances in HIV drugs, as well as research which has shown monitoring sexual activity in bathhouses has “little to no effect,” Haney announced he will be co-sponsoring Mandelman’s legislation. The change in policies would instruct the city health director to “revise the health department’s minimum standards governing the operation of adult sex venues so they no longer ban locked doors or require sex monitoring by staff,” writes the Bay Area Reporter. The proposal could also include requiring bathhouses to provide free condoms and other safe sex supplies. The ordinance requires that these new minimum standards be adopted by no later than July 1, 2020, and that there be a public notice and public comment process. “When properly operated, by providing access to safer sex educational materials and supplies and HIV and STD testing, these venues assist rather than impede our efforts to control the transmission of HIV,” said Mandelman in a statement. “I hope that this ordinance will support our efforts to get to zero new HIV infections and will put a bookend on a painful chapter in the history of the queer community in San Francisco.” Although no bathhouses currently operate in San Francisco, there are gay sex clubs, like Eros, which is a condoms-only club and doesn’t offer individual, private rooms for sexual activity. Matthew Dempsey Says It’s Ok To Be ‘Needy’

Matthew Dempsey (image via Instagram)
In his latest YouTube video, psychotherapist Matthew Dempsey explores not only why but how we should speak up to make sure our needs are met. It makes sense that we should always ask for what it is that we want, but many of us often don’t. Maybe we were ‘the best little kid in the world’ and taught ourselves to not make waves in order to be loved? Or perhaps we learned to be a rebel at a young age and now we don’t take any shit? According to Dempsey, both perspectives can “stem from our own underlying fear that we’re really not worth caring about.” Recounting a recent chapter in his life where he stood firm on what it was he wanted in terms of dating, Dempsey makes the case that it’s ok to tell people what it is we need. As Dempsey puts it, if friends or lovers can’t give or respect what it is we need from them, then maybe we need to love those folks “from a distance.” “We have to forgive the people who aren’t able to meet our needs, and we have to invest like hell into those who can,” advises Dempsey. Dempsey addresses the issue much better than I can, so hit the play button below. A Trans Teen Hears His Name Called At Starbucks

A new ad captures the quiet triumph of a transgender teen hearing his name being called as he picks up his coffee at Starbucks. The spot, part of the “What’s your name?” campaign for Starbucks, will air in the U.K. and online. Partnering with the U.K. trans youth organization Mermaids, the coffee giant will also sell limited-edition mermaid cookies to raise up to £100,000 ($130,000) for the group. The ad follows James as people throughout his day dead name him. On his school ID card, by family members, even at his doctor’s office. But when he orders his coffee at a Starbucks, he’s asked his name. “It’s James,” we hear the teen reply. A moment later, the employee calls out the name “James,” and the brief smile says it all. From Starbucks UK: At Starbucks, writing your name on a cup and calling it out is a symbol of our warm welcome. It’s a small gesture, but it’s symbolic of what we believe in: Recognition and acceptance, whoever you are, or want to be. We welcome everyone. We’re proud to support Mermaids, a charity supporting young transgender and gender diverse people and their families. If you need to speak to someone, you can find their helpline here: http://mermaidsuk.org.uk Several folks expressed their support for the ad spot on Twitter along with some of their own stories:
