Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been found guilty of attempting a coup to remain in office after losing the 2022 election.
Just hours after they had convicted the former leader, the panel of five Supreme Court justices sentenced Bolsonaro to 27 years and three months in prison.

Four of the five justices reviewing the case in the panel found the far-right politician guilty on five counts, in a ruling that will deepen political divisions and was expected to prompt a backlash from the U.S. government.
Prosecutors charged Bolsonaro with counts including attempting to stage a coup, being part of an armed criminal organization, attempted violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, as well as being implicated in violence and posing a serious threat to the state’s assets and listed heritage.
It makes Bolsonaro is the first former Brazilian president to be convicted of attempting a coup.
Bolsonaro, often dubbed “the Trump of the Tropics,” has always denied any wrongdoing. He can appeal the ruling to the full Supreme Court while being held under house arrest in Brasilia.
According to reports, Donald Trump says he is very unhappy with the conviction. And Secretary of State Marco Rubio posted on his X account that the Trump administration “will respond accordingly to this witch hunt.”
The Trump administration had already slapped Brazil a 50% tariff on imported goods from the country in reaction to the legal proceedings against Bolsonaro.

The political persecutions by sanctioned human rights abuser Alexandre de Moraes continue, as he and others on Brazil’s supreme court have unjustly ruled to imprison former President Jair Bolsonaro.
The United States will respond accordingly to this witch hunt.
