Axios: Trump Plans A Much More ‘Imperial’ Presidency If Reelected

If you go back and review Donald Trump’s time in the White House, you see a lot of turnover in high-level positions like chief of staff, Secretary of Defense, or Secretary of State. Much of that turnover came about because initially Trump didn’t know anything about being president, so he appointed people based on GOP recommendations. But we heard many reports that those experienced individuals would push back on some ideas or orders from Trump they knew were bad or outside the scope of a president’s authority. And thus – exit stage right. Today, Trump frequently tells campaign crowds he plans a much different approach if re-elected. AND his top priority in appointments will be loyalty.

From Axios:

It’s not just the Supreme Court ruling on Monday that presidents enjoy substantial legal immunity for actions in office. Trump would come to office with a Cabinet and staff pre-vetted for loyalty, and a fully compliant Republican coalition in Congress — devoid of critics in positions of real power.

Trump promises an unabashedly imperial presidency — one that would turn the Justice Department against critics, deport millions of people in the U.S. illegally, slap 10% tariffs on thousands of products, and fire perhaps tens of thousands of government staff deemed insufficiently loyal.

He’d stretch the powers of the presidency in ways not seen in our lifetime. He says this consistently and clearly — so it’s not conjecture.

Axios also notes that pressures would increase on Supreme Court Justices Sam Alito (74) and Clarence Thomas (76) to retire. If those two retired (being the oldest), Trump could end up appointing five of the nine justices on the high court. Plus, if Trump wins, it’s very possible Republicans will hold the House and win the Senate. That means a totally unfettered Donald Trump for four years.
