To make Girl Scout cookies truly an adult treat, Kris Margerum, Wine Director at Napa Valley’s inn and Michelin-starred restaurant Auberge du Soleil, has provided wine pairings for each cookie sold by the Girl Scouts.
“Even the simplest sweets can be paired with a fine wine,” said Margerum. “I love pairing confections with exquisite vintages. They shape the flavor and take the simple experience of enjoying a cookie to an entirely new level of enjoyment.”
For instance, Margerum recommends the 2007 Schramsberg Blanc de Noirs Sparkling Wine to accompany Trefoils. The creamy richness of the shortbread is balanced by the fresh lively notes of the Sparkling Wine.

An effort to prevent recognition of same-sex marriages in the “Live Free or Die” state seems to be dead for the year after a Republican-controlled state House of Representatives failed to pass the measure, despite desperate last-minute attempts to make the bill more palatable to moderates by author Rep. David Bates.
The New Hampshire House of Representatives has defeated the bill with a vote of 133-202.
At stake first was the absurd amendment proposed by Rep. David Bates (R), which would have re-implemented civil unions and given voters a chance to weigh in on that decision in a non-binding way. That amendment failed 162-188.
Then, there was a parliamentary debate as to whether to consider a humorous amendment proposed by Rep. Seth Cohn (R) that would have prohibited marriage between people who are left-handed, but the effort to bring it forth was defeated.
During the debate on the bill as originally proposed, Bates and other opponents of equality invoked comparisons between same-sex marriage and incest while protesting when others juxtaposed the measure with the racial segregation of the past.
Three-term governor John Lynch had promised to veto the bill had it passed both majority-Republican chambers of the state legislature.

An Associated Press statistical analysis of 36 years of monthly, inflation-adjusted gasoline prices and U.S. domestic oil production contradicts the GOP attack claims that President Obama is responsible for the rise in gas prices.
AP’s analysis showed no statistical correlation between how much oil comes out of U.S. wells and the price at the pump.
Political rhetoric about the blame over gas prices and the power to change them – whether Republican claims now or Democrats’ charges four years ago – is not supported by cold, hard figures. And that’s especially true about oil drilling in the U.S. More oil production in the United States does not mean consistently lower prices at the pump.
Sometimes prices increase as American drilling ramps up. That’s what has happened in the past three years. Since February 2009, U.S. oil production has increased 15 percent when seasonally adjusted. Prices in those three years went from $2.07 per gallon to $3.58. It was a case of drilling more and paying much more.
U.S. oil production is back to the same level it was in March 2003, when gas cost $2.10 per gallon when adjusted for inflation. But that’s not what prices are now.
That’s because oil is a global commodity and U.S. production has only a tiny influence on supply. Factors far beyond the control of a nation or a president dictate the price of gasoline.
Much has been made about President Obama and blaming him for higher gas prices. But, as practically every economist has already said, Presidents have little control over gas/oil prices.
When President Bush and running mate Dick Cheney campaigned in 2000, they argued that as oil executives they could get oil prices down, with Bush saying, “I would work with our friends in OPEC to convince them to open up the spigot, to increase the supply.”
Yet it was during the last few months of Bush’s term in 2008 that gas prices hit their highest: $4.27 when adjusted for inflation.
AND even if we did drill more here in the US, that doesn’t mean the oil would STAY in the US.
I think there’s a supposition that if we drill oil here, it will stay here. Oil companies, however, are happy to sell to the highest bidder – even if that’s China or India and NOT the United States. There’s no law saying “native oil” stays in the US.
Oil companies drill for oil and sell it to the highest bidder on the world market. Period. There’s no national loyalty based on where oil comes from.

The Denver Broncos have traded quarterback Tim Tebow to the New York Jets in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick, Newsday is reporting.
Tebow became redundant in Denver after the team signed Peyton Manning to a five-year, $96 million contract. Newsday adds:
“Earlier this offseason, the Jets signed starting quarterback Mark Sanchez to a three-year extension that runs through 2016 and includes $20 million in guaranteed money for 2012-13. Jets owner Woody Johnson said last week the Jets ‘passed on’ Manning.”
The New York Jets will reportedly leave Mark Sanchez as their starting quarterback.

Greenwell Springs Baptist Church pastor Dennis Terry says he never told those who disagree with his views that there is only one God and America was founded as a Christian nation that they should “get out!” of the country during an event at his church on Sunday featuring Rick Santorum.
Pastor Terry is saying that his comments were “taken out of context” although lots of people have seen the full length speech through the power of the internet. If you haven’t seen it yet, take a peek. It speaks for itself.
