(image via The Emmys)

The nominations for the 70th Emmy Awards are out this morning and there’s great news for LGBTQ artists and projects.

Looming large was the gay-centric mini-series The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story with 16 nominations including one for “Outstanding Limited Series” plus two nods for out uber-producer/director Ryan Murphy.

Murphy told Entertainment Weekly:

“Of course it’s thrilling to see this series attract so much recognition, and I am forever grateful to Tom Rob Smith for his brilliant take, to my producing partners Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson and Brad Falchuk for their collaboration and friendship, and to our talented cast who breathed such humanity into these characters. This was a heartbreaking story to tell, made more so by the fact that we continue as a culture to grapple with homophobia and shame and intolerance.”

Ricky Martin also scored his first Emmy nod in the “Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie” category for his work in the series. Martin gushed via Twitter:

RuPaul’s Drag Race received 10 nominations including one for “Outstanding Reality Competition” and a third-in-a-row nod to Mama Ru for “Outstanding Host for a Reality Competition.”

Plus, RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked was honored with two nominations including “Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program.”

On receiving the news, RuPaul shared with Entertainment Weekly:

“Making RuPaul’s Drag Race is a labor of love. The fact that members of the Television Academy have recognized that passion by nominating us for 12 Emmy’s is a true honor. It takes a village, people. I want to recognize the hard work and dedication of my partners at VH1 and World of Wonder, our dedicated cast and crew, and most of all, the amazing queens that help us celebrate the heart and soul of drag. Condragulations to our fellow nominees.”

The return of NBC’s Will & Grace was graced with 5 nominations including Megan Mullally for “Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series” and Molly Shannon for “Outstanding Guest Actress In A Comedy Series.”

Also in the “Outstanding Guest Actress In A Comedy Series” are Wanda Sykes (Black-ish) and Jane Lynch (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel).

Lynch was also honored in the “Outstanding Host For A Reality Or Reality-Competition Program” category for Hollywood Game Night as was Ellen DeGeneres (Ellen’s Game of Games).

Out actress Lily Tomlin was nominated for her work on Grace & Frankie, as well as Sarah Paulson for her performance in American Horror Story: Cult. Cherry Jones got a nod for her role in the much-lauded The Handmaid’s Tale.

Kate McKinnon was nominated for “Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series” for her work on Saturday Night Live.

Evan Rachel Wood celebrates her nomination in “Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series” for her work on HBO’s Westworld.

Out actor Titus Burgess received an nom for “Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series” in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Netflix’s reboot of Queer Eye received 4 nominations including “Outstanding Structured Reality Program.”

For Broadway musical lovers, you’ll be happy to know the rapturous Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert received 13 well-deserved nominations.

Surprisingly, FX’s Pose was completely snubbed receiving zero nominations. This writer was hoping to see both transgender director/writer Janet Mock and out actor Billy Porter get some Television Academy love for their powerful work on the ground-breaking, LGBTQ-centric series set in the 1980s.

As Trump Exits NATO Summit: “I’m A Very Stable Genius”

As he left the NATO summit in Brussels, Donald Trump told reporters "I'm very consistent. I'm a very stable genius."
Donald Trump holds press event as he departs NATO summit

Although he has not held a proper press conference in over a year on American soil, as Donald Trump departed the NATO summit in Brussels, he took questions from reporters for over half an hour.

Along the way he reiterated that Russian President Vladimir Putin is not an enemy, dismissed concerns of protests during his visit to Britain, and claimed the other NATO allies had agreed to up their defense spending thanks to his requests to do so.

At one point, a journalist asked, “We understand your message, but some people ask themselves, will you be tweeting differently once you board the Air Force One?”

Trump responded, “No, that’s other people that do that I don’t. I’m very consistent. I am a very stable genius.”

In front of the whole world. Jesus.

Tennis Star Pulls A “Kenworthy” And Kisses Her Partner On TV After A Win

Alison Van Uytvanck and Greet Minnen

Belgian tennis star Alison Van Uytvanck had much to celebrate last week during her 5th appearance at Wimbledon.

The 24-year-old celebrated her qualifying for the octafinals by running up the the stands to smooch her girlfriend, fellow pro tennis player Greet Minnen, live on TV.

Earlier this year, the tennis star – currently ranked 47th in the world – came out after winning the Hungarian Ladies Open in Budapest.

At a press conference after the match, Uytvanck was asked if she felt like a role model by coming out and if coming out lifted a weight from her shoulders. Her response was spot on:

“I don’t think it actually changed something about that – being ‘more free’ or something. We just decided to not make it personal and keep it for ourselves. I’m happy anyway if it is with a woman or a man. I just feel like we don’t have to be ashamed of this. And that’s why I also want to be free. I mean, I’m not sick, I don’t have a disease but I feel like its good that I could come out as a gay person.”

Watch Uytvanck handle the question with ease below:

You’ll recall woofy out Olympic freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy made headlines around the world when he kissed his boyfriend, Matt Wilkas, after a successful run at this year’s Winter Olympics.

Former Obama Photographer Announces New Book “Shade: A Tale Of Two Presidents”

Former White House photographer Pete Souza has announced a new book of his photography titled, Shade: A Tale of Two Presidents.

In announcing the book earlier this year, the publisher shared that the book would contrast the two presidents with “unforgettable images of President Obama delivering new power and meaning when framed by tweets, headlines, quotes, and other material from the first 500 days of the Trump administration.”

In revealing the cover via his Instagram, Souza wrote, “If OBAMA: An Intimate Portrait is a coffee table book, then SHADE is an every table book. If you’ve been following my Instagram feed since the last inauguration, then you have an idea what this book is about (but of course there will be some surprises.”

With a drop date of October 16, you can pre-order the new book here.

The photographer, who currently has almost 2 million followers on Instagram, regularly uses the platform to troll Donald Trump via photos from Obama’s presidency and contrasting with whatever is in the current news cycle.

At one point last year, he shared a series of 15 Time Magazine covers captioned: “Someone has a lot of catching up to do.”

If you don’t follow him there, you should. He’s very clever.

Here are a few examples:

Trans Icon Janet Mock Makes History With ‘POSE’ Directorial Debut

Janet Mock made history earlier this week as the first transgender woman of color to write and direct an episode of TV with the recent Pose episode, “Love is the Message.”
Janet Mock (via Instagram)

Janet Mock made history earlier this week as the first transgender woman of color to write and direct an episode of TV with the recent Pose episode, “Love is the Message.”

The series, which explores the lives of LGBTQ people in the underground ‘ball scene’ alongside the emerging Donald Trump era in the go-go 1980s, artfully brings not only sexual orientation and gender identity to a mainstream TV audience, but also factors in the intersectionality of race.

In an interview with website them, Mock shared:

“The ballroom is a black and brown space before it’s a trans and queer space. So you can’t just say we have this great trans and queer show, you have to add in the layer of the race stuff… had to be very clear that a white trans girl’s experience is very different than a black trans girl’s experience — especially a black trans girl that’s struggling with economic resources in 1980’s New York City.”

“So we gave Elektra (Dominique Jackson’s character) more pointed lines about whiteness, or Angel (Indya Moore) started calling Stan (Evan Peters) a white suburban boy. We had to put that stuff in there.”

This was taken under the amber light of the #posefx ballroom on my first shoot as a Director. Don’t let the smile fool you: I was nervous af about doing something I had never done before, a job that seemed to be reserved for white men, a position in the industry that rarely invited women and/or people of color to sit in the director’s chair. I doubted whether I had the skills and experience to be a director. But I was pushed by @mrrpmurphy who told me I could (“you’re naturally bossy…like me”) and used his Half Initiative to make it happen. But still I had to talk myself through self-doubt (like so many “firsts” have done before me) by saying, “You wrote this script. You know these characters. You helped shape them, make them, move them. You got this, and your whole life as a black trans girl with all your experiences have prepared you for so many unknowns — from being the first in your family to go to college, to get a masters, to work as a journalist, to leave the safety of telling others stories to actually tell your own story, to write two memoirs that centered #girlslikeus, to be the first trans woman of color to be hired in a writer’s room…and yes, the first to write and direct an episode of television. You can do this, will do this and are deserving.” I couldn’t do it alone — no director can. I thank my mentors @mrrpmurphy & @gwynethhorderpayton for pushing, nurturing and supporting me, my DP @simondennis_dop for making it all seem so easy, my first AD Deanna Leslie Kelly, my production designer @jame03, HMU @wigorama @barryleemoe @sherrilaurence, @eriberryk and @tanasepopa for being architects, my editor Shelly Westerman, the marvelous @alexisvmw, my ❤️ @svcanals and the entire crew and the cast especially @theebillyporter, @katemara, @indyamoore, @mjrodriguez7, @evanpeters, and our guest star @johnnysibilly who gave all of themselves to episode 6. LOVE IS THE MESSAGE — and there was no way to write, prep and shoot this script without that LOVE. I hope you enjoy “Love Is the Message” tonight on @fxnetworks. @poseonfx airs at 9PM.
A post shared by Janet Mock (@janetmock) on Jul 8, 2018 at 9:07am PDT

At this year’s VH1 Trailblazer Honors, Ryan Murphy spoke with love and deep respect regarding his experience working with Mock. He also shared that he pushed the trans icon into her first directing gig.

“I said, ’No, Janet, you have to direct. You have to!’ And she wasn’t sure, and I pushed her and pushed her. She did it. And I’m so honored and thrilled to say that it is perhaps the best hour of television in my entire career that I have been associated with.”

“And I say, to Janet, thank you and I’m in awe of you.”

The series has really captured my attention not only for its subject matter but for the quality of the series. The writing, the performances, the production – it all adds up to very powerful, revealing story-telling.

Watch the trailer for Mock’s episode below.

Trump Administration Siphons HIV/AIDS Funds For More Child Detention Centers

As the public battle about family separations at the U.S. southern border rages on, reports show the Trump administration is taking money from HIV/AIDS programs to fund further separations.
Donald Trump

As the public battle about family separations at the U.S. southern border rages on, reports show the Trump administration is taking money from HIV/AIDS programs to fund further separations.

The Office of Refugee Resettlement is looking ahead at the possibility that 25,450 more beds for immigrant children could be needed by year’s end.

The office, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, was apparently surprised when U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the new “zero tolerance” policy that families would be separated if caught crossing the border without authorization.

Under the policy, parents are imprisoned and children have been placed in cages that Sen. Jeff Merkley, who visited a facility, described as resembling “dog kennels.”

Now, in preparation for a new surge of family separations, the HHS is not only asking for supplemental funds, but according to news website Slate is also planning to reallocate money from the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program.

The Ryan White CARE Act was introduced in 1990 by Sen. Ted Kennedy weeks after the death of its namesake Ohio teen, who had been infected with HIV via a blood transfusion to treat his hemophilia. The bill was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush.

According to the program’s website, the Ryan White HIV/AIDS program “provides a comprehensive system of care that includes primary medical care and essential support services for people living with HIV who are uninsured or underinsured.”

Slate’s reporting indicates the process of transferring those HIV/AIDS funds has already begun.

This is just one more example of the Trump/Pence administration’s bias against the LGBTQ community which is massively impacted by the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Vice President MikePence famously pledged to siphon funding from the program in order to fund state-sponsored ‘gay cure’ therapy.

On his 2000 Congressional campaign website, Pence posted:

“Congress should support the reauthorization of the Ryan White Care Act only after completion of an audit to ensure that federal dollars were no longer being given to organisations that celebrate and encourage the types of behaviours that facilitate the spreading of the HIV virus.

“Resources should be directed toward those institutions which provide assistance to those seeking to change their sexual behavior.”

Additionally, HHS is moving $79 million from refugee resettlement programs. The loss of those funds will undercut medical assistance and social services for refugees in the United States.

Hawaii: State Supreme Court Refuses To Review Ruling Against Anti-LGBTQ B&B Owner

A B&B owner who refuses to rent a room to a lesbian couple asked the Hawaii state Supreme Court to review the ruling against her. The court said 'no' leaving the lower courts decision in place.

In 2007, Diane Cervelli and Taeko Bufford of Long Beach, California, traveled to the Aloha state to visit a friend who had just given birth.

The child apparently was having some health issues at the time, so the couple decided to seek accommodations nearby. The closest option was The Aloha Bed & Breakfast.

But when the couple called Phyllis Young, owner of The Aloha B&B in Honolulu’s Hawaii Kai area, Young told the couple same-sex relationships are “detestable” and “defile our land.”

Hawaii’s public accommodation law specifically bans establishments that provide lodging to transient guests from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation, race, color, ancestry, religion, disability and sex —including gender identity or expression.

Later that year, Cervilli and Bufford filed a complaint with Hawaii’s Civil Rights Commission.

Although Young asserted she had the right to discriminate since her business was in her home, the commission determined Young had openly discriminated against the couple.

Cervilli and Bufford consequently filed a lawsuit against Young in 2011.

In 2013, a Hawaii First Circuit Court judge ruled that Young had violated the state’s public accommodation laws and ordered her to stop discriminating.

Young appealed the decision and in February of this year, the Intermediate Court of Appeals affirmed the lower court ruling.

In a last ditch effort, the B&B owner asked the state’s Supreme Court to review the case. The high court declined to do so today, and effectively affirming the lower court ruling that Young had discriminated.

Earlier this year, Bufford told QVoiceNews, “I can’t tell you how much it hurt to be essentially told, ‘we don’t do business with your kind.’ It still stings to this day.”

“We thought the days when business owners would say ‘We’re open to the public – but not to you’ was a thing of the past,” she added. “You don’t have to change your beliefs,” she said, “but you do have to follow the law just as everyone else does.”

Lambda Legal Senior Attorney Peter Renn hailed the decision saying in a statement:

“In letting the existing decision stand, Hawai‘i today joined a long line of states across the country that understand how pernicious and damaging a religious license to discriminate would be.”

“In fact, since the U.S. Supreme Court’s narrow ruling in Masterpiece Cakeshop in early June, three state courts – in Arizona, Oregon and now Hawai`i – have either ruled against or refused to review rulings against business owners who have claimed religious justifications to discriminate.”

Nut-Job Predicts Democrats Will Shoot Republicans To Suppress GOP Voter Turnout

Virulently anti-LGBTQ ‘citizen reporter’ and far-right nut job Rick Wiles told his TV audience today on the TruNews program that Democrats plan to begin killing Republicans in an effort to suppress GOP voter turnout in 2020.
Far-right Nutjob Rick Wiles

Virulently anti-LGBTQ ‘citizen reporter’ and far-right nut job Rick Wiles told his TV audience on the TruNews program that Democrats plan to begin killing Republicans in an effort to suppress GOP voter turnout in 2020.

I kid you not.

Declaring the Democratic Party a “terrorist organization,” Wiles called Democrats everything from “demonic” to “baby killers.”

“The Democrats are now stalking members of the Trump administration,” Wiles said. “My friends, I’m telling you there is a day coming, perhaps this year, they’re going to shoot members of the Cabinet, they’re going to shoot members of the House and Senate.”

“The Democrats have lost their minds, they’ve gone insane,” he added. “We have to put bodyguards around our elected officials to protect them from Democrats? At what point do you charge the Democratic Party with being a terrorist organization?”

“The Left has gone berserk. They’ve already crossed the line,” he railed. “They’ve already lost their senses – They’re willing to do anything and killing is the next thing that they’ll do.”

“Don’t forget the Democratic Party stated the first civil war,” said Wiles as he continued his rant. “The Democrats will start the second Civil War to protect abortion.”

“They’re fanatical baby killers. Anybody that would kill a baby would kill you. They want to kill babies, of course they’ll kill you. They’re crazy. They’re demonic.”

“Mark my words,” Wiles hissed. “They’re going to kill Republicans and by 2020, on election day, they’re going to kill Republican voters, they’re going to block Republicans from voting.”

Wiles has previously said ebola could “solve” America’s problem with gays; declared the Las Vegas mass shooting was carried out by a super secret gay nazi death squad; that the city of Houston was punished by God with Hurricane Harvey because they love LGBT sexual perversion; and that gay Nazis control America.
