Mayor Pete Shares With Rachel Maddow His Coming Out Process

In a revealing one-on-one interview on MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show, Maddow spoke with Democratic presidential contender Mayor Pete Buttigieg about a range of topics, including being closeted and coming out.

In a revealing one-on-one interview on MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show, Maddow spoke with Democratic presidential contender Mayor Pete Buttigieg about a range of topics, including being closeted and coming out.

It was a particularly candid exchange as Maddow pointed out the two had both been Rhodes scholars. Even though Maddow had gone through the Rhodes scholarship process 10 years before Buttigieg, she noted that she had been the first out American Rhodes Scholar.

But Buttigieg didn’t come out until he was 33-years-old – after his college days, his Rhodes Scholar days, serving in the military and becoming mayor of South Bend, Indiana.

“I think it would have killed me to be closeted for that long,” said Maddow without coloring the statement. “Not coming out until your early 30s, I just wonder if that was hurtful to you? If it hurt you to do it?”

“It was hard,” Buttigieg replied. “It was really hard.”

“Coming out is hard, but being in the closet is harder,” Maddow pointed out.

The 37-year-old mayor continued, sounding much like many people who wrestle with their closet demons.

“There were certainly plenty of indications by the time I was 15 or so that I could point back [and say] ‘yeah, this kid’s gay.’ I guess I just really needed to not be. There’s this war that breaks out inside a lot of people when they realize that they might be something they’re afraid of. It took me a very long time to resolve that.”

It was his deployment in Afghanistan that led Buttigieg to his personal epiphany.

“I realized that you only get to be one person; you don’t know how long you have on this earth,” he shared. “And by the time I came back, I realized, ‘I gotta do something.’”

That ‘something’ would be publicly coming out via an op-ed published in the South Bend Tribune in 2015 as he was running for reelection. He would go on to win in a landslide with 80% of the vote.

Today, as the first openly gay Democratic candidate for president, Buttigieg acknowledges the world seems more accepting.

“One thing that gives me a lot of encouragement – don’t get me wrong, as you know there’s plenty of ugliness that comes in from all over the place – most people, I think, are either supportive or even enthusiastic about the idea of the first out person going this far,” he said. “Or, they find a way to let me know they don’t care – and that’s historic, too.”

“One day, the way this will work, when the mayor is trying to figure out how to come out, you go to the next rubber chicken you’re going to and your date’s the same sex. And that’s that,” he said. “People shrug, figure it out, and get on with the evening.”

“It didn’t feel that way in Indiana in 2015.”

I’ll note it’s interesting to watch Mayor Pete listen. He’s not just waiting to repeat a talking point, but really listening, hearing, and considering his response.

Watch the exchange below.

Trump Drags Fox News For Giving Bernie Sanders Air Time

Donald Trump ranted on Twitter about Fox News giving Sen. Bernie Sanders prime time exposure in a town hall last night with anchor Bret Baier. He wrote, "So weird to watch Crazy Bernie on @FoxNews. Not surprisingly, @BretBaier and the “audience” was so smiley and nice. Very strange, and now we have @donnabrazile?"

Notice that he puts the word audience in quotations…? Is the Donald calling the folks in attendance ‘fake?’

Perhaps what really riled the Donald up was Sanders’ pitch for ‘Medicare for all’ without any interruption by the Fox folks.

Redacted Version Of Mueller Report To Be Released Thursday

The Hill is reporting that the report by Special Counsel Robert Mueller will be released Thursday morning, according to a Justice Department spokesman.
Robert Mueller

The Hill is reporting that the report by Special Counsel Robert Mueller will be released Thursday morning, according to a Justice Department spokesman.

Democrats in Congress have been insisting on the release of the full report, but Attorney General William Barr has said that certain information — like grand jury material and information relating to other ongoing investigations — will be redacted from the document.

Barr sent a letter to Congress late last month announcing the end of Mueller’s probe and outlining the core conclusions of the special counsel’s investigation, including a finding that the Trump campaign did not collude with Russia during the 2016 election.

Barr also wrote in that letter that Mueller did not reach a conclusion on whether President Trump obstructed justice, but said that he and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein determined that the evidence was not sufficient to bring forward such a charge.

Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon Scores With Elton John Tune On ‘American Idol’

Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon on ‘American Idol’

American Idol went live last night as the Top 14 look to the public’s votes to continue in the competition.

The show will reveal Monday night which contestants will go on to the Top 10. America’s votes will determine 7 of those spots, while the judges will choose 3 contestants to continue.

Out singer/songwriter Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon knocked another song out of the park continuing his string of solid performances.

As I’ve previously reported, his story as the openly gay son of a pastor in Maryland has already touched viewers. Following his progress, we’ve learned his family didn’t exact embrace his coming out three years ago.

But that drama was nowhere in sight last night as the 26-year-old sat down at the piano to sing.

Putting his effortless high notes front and center, Harmon delivered a passionate, gospel-tinged version of Elton John’s classic, “We All Fall in Love Sometimes.”

The judges were falling over themselves to praise the young singer from Maryland.

American Idol judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry & Luke Bryan
“You just took an Elton John song, you went past Freddy Mercury, and you ‘Jeremiah-ed’ the whole thing,” said Lionel Richie.

Comparing Harmon to the two queer pop icons, Richie added, “There are notes that Elton can’t do; then there are notes that Freddie Mercury can’t do; and you went to a Z flat somewhere up there past Pluto and Mars. It was amazing. And your voice is amazing, and your career is going to be amazing.”

Katy Perry, who is also a ‘PK’ (pastor’s kid), has been a staunch supporter of Harmon’s from day one.

“I’m a mess,” she confessed, clearly shook. “I’m just so proud.”

“You’re such a gift,” she continued, effusive with praise. “ You’re a light to the world. Your story is everything, and your talent supersedes all.”

“The whole time I’m watching that I’m like I’m not worthy to be sitting here watching,” added Luke Bryan — points were made. “I just see Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon on this big billboard.”

The judges loved his performance, but we’ll have to see how the voting viewers respond.

What do you think, readers? Is Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon the next American Idol?

Notre Dame Cathedral In Paris On Fire

(screen capture/NBC News)

UPDATE – USA Today reports that “nothing will remain” after the devastating fire. There is still an ongoing effort to save works of art.

The fire burned for hours, virtually unabated despite the efforts of hundreds of firefighters. The flames continued to glow when darkness fell. “A special mission has been launched to try to save all works of art that can be saved,” Emmanuel Grégoire, first deputy to the mayor of Paris, said on French TV.

“Everything is burning, nothing will remain from the frame,” Notre Dame spokesman Andre Finot told French media. The cause was not immediately known, but officials said it could be linked to renovation work. The cathedral is in the midst of a $6.8 million renovation project.

French historian Camille Pascal told French TV the fire was destroying “invaluable heritage.” “It’s been 800 years that the Cathedral watches over Paris,” Pascal said. “Happy and unfortunate events for centuries have been marked by the bells of Notre Dame.”

From NBC News:

Flames were spotted shooting from the historic Notre Dame cathedral in Paris on Monday.

Smoke was billowing from the structure and could be seen from miles away in the French capital.

The flames appeared to be around scaffolding at the top of the famous church, where renovations were being done.

“A terrible fire is underway at Notre Dame Cathedral,” Mayor Anne Hidalgo tweeted. She called on Parisians to stay away from the area to allow firefighters to do their work.

Madonna and Latin Pop star Maluma announce new duet, “Medellín”

Barely a day after revealing her upcoming album will be titled, Madame X, Madonna took to social media again, this time to announce that the first single from the long-awaited LP will be “Medellín”, a duet with Latin superstar Maluma.

The sexy Latin singer posted a pic on his Instagram the same day dubbing the couple, “Ms. Crazy & Mr. Safe” with a black heart emoji.

“I met Madonna during the VMAs in New York,” Maluma told Billboard. “After that, I had the opportunity to spend some time with her in Los Angeles. She was in the studio and I joined her.”

“We just had a beautiful connection,” he added. “She is one of my biggest inspirations.”

We have to wait until Wednesday to check out the new single by the power-pop duo, so for now, let’s get to know Maluma a bit better.

Mayor Pete Makes It Official “I Am Running For President Of The United States”

An enthusiastic crowd came together today in South Bend, Indiana, as Mayor Pete Buttigieg officially announced his candidacy for president of the United States. "My name is Pete Buttigieg, they call me Mayor Pete." said the mayor standing before a crowd of thousands in his hometown. "I am a proud son of South Bend, Indiana and I am running for president of the United States."

An enthusiastic crowd came together today in South Bend, Indiana, as Mayor Pete Buttigieg officially announced his candidacy for president of the United States.

“My name is Pete Buttigieg, they call me Mayor Pete,” said the mayor standing before a crowd of thousands in his hometown. “I am a proud son of South Bend, Indiana and I am running for president of the United States.”

In speaking those words, he becomes the first openly gay Democratic presidential candidate in the history of the country. Should he make it to the finish line, he will not only be the first openly LGBTQ president, but the youngest person ever elected to the office.

“I recognize the audacity of doing this as a Midwestern millennial mayor,” he added, “more than a little bold, at age 37, to seek the highest office in the land.”

The South Bend mayor thanked his husband – “my love, Chasten” – “for giving me the strength to do this and the grounding to be myself as we go.”

The young mayor told the crowd, and the world, that the guiding principles for his campaign are “simple enough to fit on a bumper sticker: freedom, security, and democracy.”

Expanding on the topic of freedom, he shared, “Take it from Chasten and me, you’re not free if the county clerk gets to tell you who you ought to marry ‘cause of their idea of their political beliefs.”

He also noted that it was just one vote on the Supreme Court that gave him the freedom to marry his husband.

“Our marriage exists by the grace of a single vote on the US Supreme Court,” said Buttigieg. “Nine women and men sat down in a room and took a vote and they brought me the most important freedom in my life.”

Buttigieg, currently serving his second term as mayor of South Bend, is Harvard educated, a Rhodes scholar, an Afghanistan war veteran who speaks seven languages.

In other words, the polar opposite of the current occupant of the White House.

In recent weeks, he’s surged from zero support in political surveys to 3rd place in multiple polls.

A Monmouth University poll published this week showed Buttigieg in third place in Iowa with 9% support behind former Vice President Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders, who garnered 27% and 16% respectively.

In New Hampshire, a Saint Anselm College poll put Biden at 23% support, Sanders at 16%, and Buttigieg at 11% support.

Those results put him ahead of more well-known names like Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, and Amy Klobuchar.

Annise Parker, CEO of the LGBTQ Victory Fund, was present at the announcement event, and said in a statement Buttigieg “shattered a lavender ceiling once thought unbreakable, becoming the first openly LGBTQ Democratic presidential candidate in American history and our first real shot at the Oval Office.”

“There is enormous power in an openly gay presidential candidate stumping at town halls in Iowa and speaking to Americans from the presidential debate stage – it changes perceptions of our community and raises the bar for candidates who seek LGBTQ support,” added Parker.
