Anti-Fascism Expert Tries To Leave U.S. Amid Death Threats, Flight Reservation Cancelled After Checking In

An expert on anti-fascism who teaches at Rutgers University was attempting to leave the U.S. with his family on Wednesday after receiving multiple death threats.

But upon arriving at the boarding gate at Newark Liberty Airport, he was informed that his reservation had been cancelled.

From the New York Times:

A Rutgers University expert on antifa tried to flee the United States with his family on Wednesday night in the wake of death threats that followed President Trump’s push to characterize the left-wing antifascist movement as a domestic terrorist organization.

But when the expert, Mark Bray, got to the gate at Newark Liberty International Airport, after getting the family’s boarding passes, checking their bags and going though security, he was told by the airline that “the reservation was just canceled,” he said late Wednesday night.

It was another hurdle for Dr. Bray, a historian who published the 2017 book “Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook,” and who had taught courses on anti-fascism and terrorism at Rutgers in New Jersey in relative obscurity until a few weeks ago.

Since the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, Bray has become a target of right-wing hate, accused of being part of the movement he’s studied as a historian. Bray says he’s never been part of “Antifa,” it’s just the focus of his research.

Things got worse after the Rutgers Turning Point chapter circulated a petition demanding he be fired. Fox News picked up the story and the threats accelerated.

Bray says he rebooked for a flight today. Hopefully he and his family will be able to get to safety.
