All Israeli Hostages And Palestinian Prisoners (Finally) Released

Per last week’s announced agreement, Hamas released its hostages in Gaza this morning and nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners in Israel were freed.

Donald Trump celebrated the exchange in Egypt where he’s taking part in a summit meeting with other world leaders.

From the New York Times:

Hamas militants attacked Israel in October 2023, killing about 1,200 people and abducting about 250. In response, Israel then bombed and invaded Gaza, killing about 67,000 Palestinians, according to Gazan health authorities.

Hamas released 20 hostages from Gaza on Monday as Mr. Trump arrived in Israel. Hours later, the Israeli authorities said that they had finished freeing all 1,968 Palestinian prisoners and detainees slated for release as part of the hostage exchange deal.

In Israel, Mr. Trump hailed the agreement as “the end of the war” in an address to cheering members of Israel’s Parliament, but there remain many unanswered questions about whether Israel and Hamas can reach a lasting peace, and about the future of Gaza, which has been devastated by two years of war.

Red Cross officials also traveled to a meeting point in southern Gaza to pick up a number of coffins bearing the remains of deceased hostages, according to the Israeli military.

More from Axios:

The hostages were taken to a military base outside the Gaza Strip to be reunited with their families, and from there to hospitals in Israel to receive medical treatment.

The hostages all spent most of the past two years in underground tunnels, with very little food and water and almost no medical care for the wounds they suffered during Hamas’ Oct. 7 attacks.
