The UK has announced a ban on the harmful practice of conversion therapy for gay or bisexual people – but not for transgender people.

The announcement, which affects England and Wales, came just hours after the government said it was going to reverse and drop plans to ban the ‘ex-gay’ therapy. Conversion therapy is the debunked theory of attempting to change someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity through several psychological and medical methods. Nearly every professional medical organization in the U.S. denounces conversion therapy including the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Psychiatric Association, the World Psychiatric Association and more.
