Senate Republicans ‘Would Be Prepared’ For Possible Supreme Court Nominee

It seems as though something may be afoot behind-the-scenes in terms of the U.S. Supreme Court as two prominent Senate Republicans made comments today on possible SCOTUS nominees.

From Politico today:

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Tuesday that Republicans would quickly fill a Supreme Court vacancy if one opens up before the midterms.

“That’s a contingency I think around here you always have to be prepared for. And if that were to happen, yes, we would be prepared to confirm,” Thune told reporters Tuesday.

Politico goes on to note that Trump mentioned Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) as a possible nominee earlier this year.

And from the Washington Examiner:

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) floated two of his Republican colleagues as possible nominees for the Supreme Court as speculation swirls over whether Justice Samuel Alito may soon step down.

Grassley, whose committee is responsible for ushering judicial nominees to Senate confirmation, told the Washington Examiner on Tuesday that he would recommend Sens. Mike Lee (R-UT) and Ted Cruz (R-TX) for the high court post if Alito announces his retirement.

In March, we saw reports that Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, 76, was treated for dehydration at a hospital after feeling ill during a Federalist Society event in Philadelphia. Perhaps things are more serious than we know?

Or, are Republicans applying a little pressure to confirm someone before the midterm elections out of concern they may lose control of the Senate?
