Emmy Award-nominee Lea Michele, along with the Broadway cast and orchestra of Chess, threw down this terrific performance of “Nobody’s Side” from the hit revival last week on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
Michele sounds great, although her acting in the song feels a bit muddled for my taste. I love that the show’s ensemble and full orchestra were featured. And mad props to Colbert’s lighting team.
I’m a huge fan of the score written by Tim Rice and ABBA pop stars Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus. I saw the original London production of Chess starring West End legend Elaine Paige back in the ’80’s (spectacular), as well as the original Broadway incarnation (some good, some not so much).
This new revival of Chess opened on Broadway on November 16. It’s currently scheduled to run at the Imperial Theatre through Sunday, June 14, 2026.
The musical is a seductive showdown of love, loyalty, and power on a global stage. Two of the greatest chess players in the world (played by Aaron Tveit and Nicholas Christopher) compete for something beyond victory as the woman between them (Lea Michele) is caught in a high-stakes battle of desire and devotion.
Friends who’ve seen this production tell me the two leading men are fantastic.
