Based on Lauren Greenfield’s 2012 documentary film and the life stories of Jackie and David Siegel, Chenoweth plays billionaire heiress “Jackie Siegel,” alongside F. Murray Abraham as “David Siegel.”
From BroadwayWorld:
From computer engineer to Mrs. Florida to billionairess, Jackie Siegel sees herself as the embodiment of the American Dream.
Now, as the wife of David “The Timeshare King” Siegel and mother of their eight children, they invite us to behold their most grandiose venture yet: they’re building the largest private home in America in Orlando, Florida – a $100 million house big enough for her dreams and inspired by the Palace of Versailles.
But with the Great Recession of 2008 looming, Jackie and David’s dreams begin to crumble, along with their lavish lifestyle. The Queen of Versailles explores the true cost of fame and fortune, and one family’s pursuit of the American Dream – at any cost.
I saw the show two days before opening and was sorely disappointed.
While there’s no denying Chenoweth’s talent, I found the book by Lindsey Ferrentino extremely disjointed. Plus, the show asks that we cheer on Jackie Siegel, who’s key characteristic is being a narcissist.
It really felt like Chenoweth was pulling a huge boulder up an enormous hill the whole time.
And the score by Stephen Schwartz (WICKED/Godspell/Pippin) unmemorable – not near the level of his past work. Tuneless and banal, I walked away without being able to remember a single melody.
Like the mansion Siegel was never able to finish, this is a Broadway show that never finds its foundation. Unfunny and unfocused.
The best moment in the show is a brief, moving monologue (lifted from the documentary) in which the family nanny (Melody Butiu) laments that she hasn’t seen her own kids in the Philippines in decades.
One critic called it “a two-hour-and-40-minute luxury-car crash happening at the St. James Theatre.”
I don’t celebrate any Broadway show closing, but especially given the high price of Bway tickets these days, this was not a worthy endeavor in my humble opinion.
