Aaron Tveit, Lea Michele and Nicholas Christopher and the cast of the new Broadway revival of CHESS performs a medley of “Where I Want to Be,” “One Night in Bangkok” and “Someone Else’s Story” on The Tonight Show.
The musical is set during the Cold War and tells the story of an American and a Russian chess champion competing for the world title, and for the love of the same woman.
They certainly have the chops for the roles. I love seeing Aaron have so much fun with “Bangkok.”
I saw the original London production (loved) and the original short-lived Broadway production back in 1988 which only lasted two months (not so much). I’ve always loved the score, but the book of the show – focused on Cold War era politics – has always been problematic.
I hear this new production has a revised book by Danny Strong. Official opening night is November 16.
