Despite all of his self-congratulatory gloating over his Alaska “summit” meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump ends up with a big nothing burger to show for his efforts.
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told NBC News’ “Meet the Press” moderator Kristen Welker in an interview posted today that “Putin is ready [for a meeting] when the agenda is ready for a summit – and this agenda is not ready at all.”
More from the New York Times:
Mr. Trump has sent mixed messages this week about the prospects for a peace deal to end Russia’s invasion.
On Fox News on Tuesday, he said he was working to arrange a direct negotiation between Mr. Putin and Mr. Zelensky because the leaders of the two warring countries may be “getting along a little bit better than I thought.”
But the Kremlin never confirmed the meeting, and Mr. Trump on Friday sounded less than optimistic that it would take place. Speaking in Washington, he referred to the two leaders as like “oil and vinegar.”
On Thursday, Russia launched one of its biggest aerial attacks of the war hitting targets across Ukraine including an American electronics business.
