New Music: The Irrepressibles ‘What I Am, Queer!’

Out British musician Jamie McDermott (aka Jamie Irrepressible) and his genre-defying project The Irrepressibles drops the bold, defiant anthem “What I Am, Queer!” today.

Just in time for Pride Month, the track – which begins with a quiet, moody feel before building to nearly-symphonic rapture – is a rallying cry for queer self-love and empathy.

Don’t expect me to apologize! Who I am is painted in the skies! You think I’m wrong? I know I’m right! But through love we’ll all make it. There’s a life and it’s waiting for you There’s a time that you won’t feel shame From all their lies & all their chains You’ll liberate you! You’ll liberate you!

I really, really like this.

“It’s about the acceptance of the truth,” says Jamie Irrepressible. “A call for a future beyond tolerance—where empathy and compassion are the answer. As the song says, it’s time we all see that freedom is for everyone.”

“I wanted to make a record specifically for the queer community,” he adds, “to create a safe space where people feel they are being expressed.”

I’ve featured The Irrepressibles’ previous releases “Be Wild” and “Destination.”
