Draft Dodger Wants To Rename Veterans Day As ‘Victory Day’

Donald Trump announced in a social media post his plans to rename Veterans Day as “Victory Day for World War I” and establish May 8 as “Victory Day for World War II.” “We won both wars, nobody was close to us in terms of strength, bravery, or military brilliance, but we never celebrate anything,” Trump wrote in his statement. “That’s because we don’t have leaders anymore, that know how to do so! We are going to start celebrating our victories again!” I guess if you’re going to shit on American veterans by renaming Veterans Day, you might as well insult all those Allied sacrifices at the same time too. Note – World War II didn’t end  on May 8th. Victory Day celebrates the end of the war in Europe, not WWII. The war raged on for three more months until Japan surrendered on September 2 which is acknowledged as VJ Day. I’m honestly surprised Trump, who never served in uniform and famously dodged the draft during the Vietnam war, doesn’t want to change it to “Suckers and Losers Day.” Veterans Day was created through congressional legislation. Therefore, the president cannot unilaterally “rename” it. The move to rename Veterans Day — which coincides with the end of World War II — would overwrite 87 years of precedent in recognizing Nov. 11 as a national holiday celebrating ALL veterans. I guess there would nothing for veterans who served in the Korean war or in Vietnam? This change would ignore the sacrifice of countless others who served.

I’m sorry, what? What about the veterans of Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan, and those who fought in other conflicts or served during peace times?

Won’t this come off as an enormous dis to most living veterans??? www.wsj.com/world/europe… [image or embed] — Clara Jeffery (@clarajeffery.bsky.social) May 2, 2025 at 8:46 AM
