This past weekend, Donald Trump shared an article on his Truth Social account that included a pink triangle—the symbol from the Nazi period used to identify and target gay men in concentration camps—overlaid with a red prohibition sign. Decades after WWII, the LGBTQ rights movement reclaimed the pink triangle as a symbol of defiance, pride, and commemoration. The article – “Army recruitment ads look quite different under Trump” -was published by the uber-conservative Washington Times.
The writer of the article commended both Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for shifting the military’s focus to “lethality” and undoing Biden-era policies that promoted diversity, including advertisements featuring LGBTQ service members. Hegseth has consistently opposed LGBTQ inclusion within the military, having previously denounced the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Now, under his guidance, Trump seems to be reinforcing the notion that LGBTQ individuals are not welcome in the military—not only through policy changes but also through messaging that utilizes Nazi-era symbols.
