Fox News Fawns Over Duffy Taking Family On Official Trip After Criticizing Buttigieg For Same

Back in January 2023, Fox News questioned then-Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg as to whether he reimbursed the federal government when his husband tagged along on an official trip repping the U.S. at the Invictus Games. But this past weekend, Fox News seemed to fawn over Donald Trump’s newly-installed Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy (a former Fox employee) for doing the same thing. Chasten Buttigieg, Pete’s husband, clapped back at the hypocrisy on social media.

From Mediaite:

On Sunday, Duffy — himself a former Fox News host — posted a video of himself and his family preparing to board Air Force One, writing “On our way to Daytona with POTUS….”

Fox News did report on Duffy and his family making the trip with Trump in two separate live hits on Sunday.

Chasten Buttigieg re-posted the video of Duffy writing, “I remember when Fox News absolutely melted when a certain Secretary took a family member on a presidential delegation. Let’s see how this one plays out.”

Here’s the transcript of the Fox News interview Chasten was referencing. As you can see, Pete made notes that no one questioned when Secretary of the Army Bill Esper (who led the previous delegation to the Invictus Games) took his wife.

BRET BAIER: You also brought your husband Chasten on a military aircraft to attend a sporting event in Netherlands.

PETE BUTTIGIEG: That’s quite a spin to put on it.

BRET BAIER: Was that reimbursed? Because that was one of the controversies.

PETE BUTTIGIEG: Of course not. I led a presidential delegation to support American wounded warriors and injured service members – the Invictus Games as has been tradition for many years. I led the American delegation as one of the great honors of my time in this job. And the diplomatic protocol on a presidential delegation is that the principal is often accompanied by their spouse. It was a great trip. Incredible.

Here’s what I want you to understand. Before me, it was the secretary of the Army under President Trump who took that trip with his wife. Before that, it was Mrs. Trump as First Lady who went to the Invictus Games. Before that, Mrs. Obama did the same thing.

And I guess the question on my mind is, if no one’s raising questions about why Secretary Esper and his wife led that delegation, as well they should have, then why is it any different when it’s me and my husband?

BRET BAIER: Understood.
