The bill, approved almost entirely along party lines on a vote of 218 to 206, would prohibit federal funding from going to K-12 schools that include transgender students on women’s sports teams.
It faces a steep challenge in the Senate, where seven Democrats would have to join Republicans to move it past a filibuster and to a final vote.
Just two Democrats joined all Republicans in voting in favor in the House, while another Democrat voted “present,” declining to register a position.
Republicans say the legislation is necessary to level the playing field for female athletes, and as a move to protect women’s spaces and women’s rights. What isn’t clear is: how would HR28 be enforced? Would students be subject to invasive body examinations by adults to determine their eligibility to play? Of course, the true point of the bill is to exclude trans women and girls from participation in school sports, and to put pressure on all women and girls to conform to rigid sex stereotypes. In that trans people make up less than one percent of the U.S. population, I think it’s telling that House Republicans are pushy this legislation so early in the new Congress. Why make demonizing trans people a high priority when the House could be working on creating jobs or lowering the price of groceries?
