Remembering LA Blade’s Troy Masters + More News

Some news items I thought worth your time: • Los Angeles Blade: Journalist Karen Ocamb pens this loving tribute to LA Blade founder Troy Masters (above with his beloved Cody) who died on December 11 by suicide. Over his career, Masters launched several important LGBTQ publications including QW (Queer Week), LGNY (which became Gay City News), and the LA Blade.OUT: Kevin McHale, who starred as “Artie Abrams” in all 6 seasons of the hit TV series GLEE, has opened up about the episode he calls his “actual breaking point.” NBC News: A 22-year-old Michigan man has admitted to planning a mass shooting at a local political party’s headquarters and a nearby bar because he associated both locations with gay people. • The Advocate: Toni Atkins, an experienced California lawmaker, has just received the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund’s endorsement for California governor in 2026. The out lesbian was elected to the state Assembly in 2010 and became speaker in 2014. She moved up to the state Senate in 2016 and became its president pro tempore in 2018.

California won’t elect a new governor to replace term-limited Gavin Newsom until 2026, but the race is already attracting plenty of attention — and @lgbtqvictoryfund.bsky.social thinks it has a winner in longtime California legislator Toni Atkins.

Washington Post: Investigators say the 15-year-old female student responsible for the school shooting in Wisconsin earlier this week apparently had an unstable home life as her parents had reportedly divorced and remarried three times. • JoeMyGod: Beginning on December 25, audiences are invited to sing along with the hit movie musical WICKED in interactive screenings which feature on-screen lyrics for all the film’s musical numbers.
