Donald Trump announced last night he plans to impose 25% tariffs on ALL goods coming into the U.S. from Mexico and Canada, and a 10% tariff “above any additional tariffs” on China if the three countries don’t put an end to illegal immigration and drug smuggling.
President-elect Donald Trump said he plans to institute tariffs of 25 percent on all products imported from Canada and Mexico, and 10 percent on those from China.
Here’s a guide to which goods the United States imports from Mexico, Canada and China. https://t.co/ndYx9ss2rv — The Washington Post (@washingtonpost) November 26, 2024
From the Washington Post:
U.S. imports from Mexico include cars, machinery, electrical equipment, food and beer. Canada supplies oil and gas, machinery and parts and much else. The United States relies on China for electronics, particularly phones, along with toys, furniture and plastics.
Economists warn that tariffs could affect grocery prices, which were a key election issue. Mexico supplied more than half of U.S. fresh fruit imports in 2022, according to the Agriculture Department.
In his social media announcement, he added that such tariffs “will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!” This shouldn’t be news to anyone who followed the Donald’s presidential campaign where he often referred to tariffs as the most “beautiful word in the dictionary.” Although, Trump’s proposed tariffs would appear to violate the terms of a free-trade deal he himself signed into law in 2020.

But a new Harris poll conducted for The Guardian finds that 69% of Americans feel Trump’s tariffs on goods will increase the price of goods they pay for in the U.S. Wasn’t he supposed to bring the price of things DOWN? Leaders from the three countries expressed their concerns. Doug Ford, the premier of Ontario, Canada’s most populous province, said the tariffs would be “devastating to workers and jobs” in both the U.S. and Canada. A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy, said, “The idea of China knowingly allowing fentanyl precursors to flow into the US runs completely counter to facts and reality.” And Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum suggested that Mexico could retaliate with tariffs of its own. #SoMuchWinning
