Kansas Governor Vetoes Ban On Gender-Affirming Care

Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly (D) on Friday vetoed a proposed ban on gender-affirming care for minors, saying the bill dictates to parents how to raise and care for their children. “To be clear, this legislation tramples parental rights,” Kelly said in a statement. https://twitter.com/KCStar/status/1778893375954911359 From NPR:

In rejecting an attempt to have Kansas join at least 24 other states in banning or restricting gender-affirming care for minors, Kelly argued that a ban “tramples parental rights” and targets “a small group.”

“If the Legislature paid this much attention to the other 99.8% of students, we’d have the best schools on earth,” she wrote.

The bill also would require that the state revoke the licenses of any doctors violating the ban and bar recipients of state funds for treating children or state employees who work with children from advocating gender-affirming care for them.

There’s still a possibility state lawmakers could vote to override the veto. The bill passed in the Senate 27-13 with a veto-proof majority. And while the House vote was two votes short of a veto-proof margin, if two House GOPers who weren’t present for the initial vote showed up for the override vote, the two-thirds majority could be reached. Gov. Kelly vetoed similar legislation last year but GOP lawmakers were unable to garner enough votes to override the veto. As I’ve mentioned many times here on The Randy Report, every major medical organization, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association, supports the provision of age-appropriate, gender-affirming care for transgender and non-binary people. https://twitter.com/TimVCarpenter/status/1778961739544981761
