House GOP Will Nominate Steve Scalise For Speaker

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) looks to be the Republican nominee to lead the House after the ouster of former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy. From the New York Times:

By a vote of 113 to 99 during a closed-door party meeting, Mr. Scalise turned back a challenge by Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio, the chairman of the Judiciary Committee and a favorite of the hard right.

His candidacy will now go to the House floor, where chaos reigned the last time Republicans tried to elect a speaker, and the divisions in the party could make for another raucous election.

Upon exiting the closed-door meeting, several Republicans signaled they still plan to vote for Jordan in the full House vote. Scalise will still need 217 votes on the floor of the House to become Speaker. He can only afford to lose 4 Republican votes. The Democrats have already announced they plan to nominate Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) as the Dem candidate for Speaker. https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1712156142539841592
