According to GasBuddy’s 2024 annual Thanksgiving Travel Survey, 72% of Americans plan to take a road trip over the Thanksgiving holiday.
After several years of pandemic-influenced travel changes, this year’s data shows a return to more traditional Thanksgiving travel plans, with 72% of respondents indicating they will be driving to their destination – up from just 41% in 2023, 38% in 2022, 32% in 2021 and 35% in 2020.
This figure is closer to pre-pandemic levels, when 65% drove for Thanksgiving in 2019.
AAA projects a record 71.7 million people will travel by car over Thanksgiving – that’s an additional 1.3 million travelers on the road compared to last year. This year’s number also surpasses pre-pandemic numbers when 70.6 million people drove to their Thanksgiving destinations in 2019. Additionally, AAA projects 5.84 million people will fly domestically this holiday. That’s an increase of 2% compared to last year and a nearly 11% increase over 2019 But remember – three weeks ago, folks said they couldn’t afford eggs.
And to think 3 weeks ago Americans ranted about the cost of eggs and couldn’t afford groceries.
