The newly-released trailer for the upcoming Maestro, starring Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan, has the emotional impact of a tidal wave. The film, co-written and directed by Cooper, chronicles the complicated love story between legendary music genius Leonard Bernstein and his wife Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein. “One can be as free as one likes without guilt or confession,” Mulligan’s Felicia says to Cooper’s Leonard. “Please, I know exactly who you are.” Official synopsis: “Maestro is a towering and fearless love story chronicling the lifelong relationship between Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein. A love letter to life and art, Maestro, at its core, is an emotionally epic portrayal of family and love.” https://youtu.be/jsrckW2b_PU?si=qKR5Q15-ujXgnaW2 I don’t know if it’s knowing a bit of the history or the fantastic use of Bernstein’s always-emotional music, but you can feel the deeply passionate story that’s at hand. In a review for Deadline, Pete Hammond wrote that Maestro “is the work of a very assured filmmaker bringing a strong vision to the screen.” “The music and the way it is used throughout is a star player itself, certainly a reason to see this film in a theatrical setting with state-of-the-art sound systems, even if it eventually is going to be streaming on Netflix,” Hammond added. Maestro had its world premiere on September 2 at the Venice Film Festival, where it received a seven-minute standing ovation. The film lands in select theaters on November 22 then on Netflix December 20.
