AL GOP Senate Candidate Falsely Announces Taking A Knee During National Anthem Is “Against The Law”

Candidate Roy Moore

TIME Magazine reports that former Alabama Chief Justice of the state Supreme Court and current candidate for the U.S. Senate, Roy Moore, erroneously believes that professional athletes who take a knee during the national anthem are breaking the law.

(p.s. They aren’t)

In an interview with TIME magazine, the Alabama Republican argued that NFL players and others who have protested police violence are violating a section of the U.S. code which outlines how people should conduct themselves when the anthem is played. (The code merely outlines proper etiquette, and there are no legal penalties outlined in the law.)

“It’s against the law, you know that?” he said. “It was a act of Congress that every man stand and put their hand over their heart. That’s the law.” “If they didn’t have it in there, it would just be tradition. But this is law,” he said. “If we disobey this, what else are we going to disobey?

As the article states, U.S. Code 301 is not law but considered proper etiquette. If you read the few short lines of text, the word “should” not “shall” is used.

Moore himself has broken the law several times in his career. Once when he defied a court order to remove a statue of the Ten Commandments he had installed at his court house; and also when he ordered judges in his state to ignore the U.S. Supreme Court ruling which made marriage equality legal in all fifty states.

Folks on the right and left openly laughed at Moore on Twitter:

Trump Blames Obama For Released Gitmo Prisoners That Bush Released

Score another mistake for Tweeter-In-Chief, President Trump.

Shortly after this morning’s “Fox & Friends” tweeted a story about how at least 122 former Guantanamo prisoners have engaged in terrorism after their release, Trump fired off a tweet blaming President Obama:

“122 vicious prisoners, released by the Obama Administration from Gitmo, have returned to the battlefield. Just another terrible decision!”

But an Intelligence Community report on re-engaged detainees shows that Bush allowed nearly all of those releases. From the New York Daily News:

According to a report on re-engagement through July 2016, 122 of the 693 former detainees who were transferred out of Gitmo went back to terrorism. Bush oversaw the release of 532 detainees, and 113 of them — more than one-fifth — were confirmed to have re-engaged, according to the report.

Meanwhile, Obama released 161 detainees, and only nine were confirmed to have returned to terrorism.

So – 113 detainees released by George W. Bush returned to terrorism, 9 released by Obama.

Much too quick on the Twitter finger there, Chief Cheeto.

It must be so much easier to be the big boss in your own company where people get fired for pointing out facts. Right, Mr. Trump?

Video: Vice-President Dick Cheney “Wrong Then, Wrong Now”

As former Vice-President Cheney continues the rounds of interviews opposing the Iran Nuclear agreement (which gained it’s 42nd vote of support in the Senate yesterday assuring it’s passage), the White House shares this trip on the way-back machine to remind us of how exactly Iran came to even approach being a nuclear threat.

Here’s a hint: Before the Bush/Cheney years, Iran had zero centrifuges. As Bush/Cheney left office, Iran had 5,000.

From the White House YouTube channel:

Vice President Dick Cheney opposes the Iran nuclear deal. If his reasoning sounds familiar, it’s because we’ve heard it from him before on the Iraq war.

NYPD Falls Victim To Ego

Today at the funeral of murdered NYPD Officer Wenjian Liu, hundreds of officers turned their backs – again – on Mayor De Blasio in protest as he eulogized Liu.

New York Police officers did the same last week at the funeral at the funeral of Officer Rafael Ramos, who was also killed alongside Officer Liu.

Sadly, these officers chose to ignore a call by Police Commissioner William Bratton to leave politics out of the funeral. Instead, they placed a public protest above the wishes of their commissioner and the family of the slain cop who specifically asked that there be NO political protests made.

Those requests were ignored today.

Members of the NYPD have been angry at the mayor for statements they have decided were “anti-police.” And so, have made these memorial services about THEMSELVES and not the fallen.

I grew up learning an often repeated mantra: “You can be right, or you can get what you want. And they are not always the same thing.”  Getting what you want is winning. Being right is ego.

There is a time and a place to make a political stand. At the funeral of your fallen brother is NOT that place.

Alabama: Man checks into hospital for circumcision, wakes up with penis amputated

AL.com is reporting a man who checked into Princeton Baptist Medical Center for circumcision woke up in recovery to find his penis had been amputated.  Amputated.

I’m assuming the circumcision was necessary for some serious medical reason.  And I’ll go farther and assume (hope) the amputation was due to further complications while in surgery?

Every man’s nightmare. Wow.

“When the plaintiff … awoke from his aforesaid surgical procedure, his penis was amputated,” according to the lawsuit. The plaintiffs “never gave consent for the complete or partial amputation of (his) penis.”

Efforts Tuesday evening to reach the man’s attorney, John P. Graves, were unsuccessful.

Kate DeWitt Darden, vice president of marketing and communications at Baptist Health System, said they do not comment on who might or might not have been a patient and generally do not comment on pending litigation.

The lawsuit claims that the man was never provided with an explanation as to the medical necessity of an amputation nor was never warned the circumcision procedure could result in an amputation.

The man has suffered additional/extended pain and suffering during his recovery, has spent additional time in the hospital recovering, and has been caused to spend more money. The man’s wife also claims loss of consortium.

Just imagine.

Or, actually, don’t.

Michele Bachmann lies again saying President Obama armed terrorists

Michele Bachmann throws out some more lies for her followers.

Ms. Bachmann says that President Obama “waived a ban on selling arms to terrorists.”

No.

What she’s referring to is this (via press release):

Today, the President signed a Presidential Determination exercising his authority to waive certain restrictions under the Arms Export Control Act.

This action will allow the U.S. Government to provide or license, where appropriate, certain non-lethal assistance inside or related to Syria. This includes:

1) chemical weapons-related personal protective equipment to international organizations, including the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, for the conduct of their operations;

2) chemical weapons-related life-saving assistance for organizations implementing Department of State or U.S. Agency for International Development programs to strengthen local Syrian health care providers’ ability to prepare for and respond to any use of chemical weapons; and

3) defensive chemical weapons-related training and personal protective equipment to select vetted members of the Syrian opposition, including the Supreme Military Council, to protect against the use of chemical weapons.

This action is part of longstanding and ongoing efforts to provide life-saving chemical weapons-related assistance to people in need in Syria.

The action was to help the Syrian opposition with NON-LETHAL ASSISTANCE – not chemical weapons.

Good lord, Michele. You just can’t get anything right, can you?

Sarah Palin upset over war memorial closed due to GOP-led government shutdown

Sarah Palin took to her Facebook page to complain erroneously that the President “shut down” the WWII memorial.  Yes, kids, she got it wrong again.

Somehow, the former half-term governor of Alaska has failed to notice that it was the House Republicans who shut down the government.

AND it’s the House Republicans who can choose to reopen the government at any time by putting a “clean” Continuing Resolution up for a vote in the House.

President Obama did not “shut down” any memorial. As a matter of fact, in taking care of our military, he made sure that our men and women in uniform would get paid in advance of what was then a looming shutdown.

Once again, common sense eludes Ms. Palin.

From Ms. Palin’s Facebook page:

“It’s beyond shameful to see Barack Obama disrespect and mistreat our World War II veterans so blatantly.

“Obama’s political stunt to ‘shut down’ their memorial by barricade is to elicit an angry response to generate bad publicity for people the president uses in his continual blame game. The difference is obvious. There aren’t any World War I veterans alive today to mistreat in a shameful political stunt.

“He’s deployed more guards to bar our World War II heroes from their memorial than he sent to Benghazi when our consulate was under attack.

“The President is treating our veterans the same way he treated school kids when he cancelled their White House tours. When times called for obvious government belt-tightening, he took it out on kids rather than look for anything that would affect him personally.

“And while our vets are barricaded from the memorial they built with their heroism, the government ‘slim down’ won’t affect Obama’s golf game or his family’s White House chefs.”

Remember how Chick-Fil-A says this brouhaha is about freedom of speech?

Adam Smith, who lives in Arizona, filmed himself addressing a drive-thru employee of a Chick-Fil-A to protest the company’s anti-gay donations.

His clip went viral on anti-gay sites, prompting internet sleuths to identify the man and track down his biotech employer who fired their CFO on the spot.

From the company’s press release:

“Vante regrets the unfortunate events that transpired yesterday in Tucson between our former CFO/Treasurer Adam Smith and an employee at Chick-fil-A. Effective immediately, Mr. Smith is no longer an employee of our company. The actions of Mr. Smith do not reflect our corporate values in any manner. Vante is an equal opportunity company with a diverse workforce, which holds diverse opinions. We respect the right of our employees and all Americans to hold and express their personal opinions, however, we also expect our company officers to behave in a manner commensurate with their position and in a respectful fashion that conveys these values of civility with others. We hope that the general population does not hold Mr. Smith’s actions against Vante and its employees.

A blogger for the Tucson Citizen denounced the firing:

“We all know that the Chick-Fil-A appreciation day is all about supporting “the first amendment” and “free speech”. As long as the speech is anti-gay, of course.  Otherwise it’s free speech for me but not for thee, at least at the Tucson company Vante. Adam Smith, Chief Financial Officer at Vante, on his own personal time and with no connection to his employer, Vante, took it upon himself to video his protest of Chick-Fil-A as “hateful” and post the video to YouTube.”

“Mr. Smith’s actions were described as “bullying”, but I confess that I can’t find any bullying in his protest. What you think may depend upon the side you are on, but there is no doubt what side Vante is on.  That “free speech” is such a tricky thing, it seems.”
