FDA Approves ‘Quick Result’ Coronavirus Test

The Washington Post reports the FDA has approved a new “rapid result” coronavirus test that can deliver results in 45 minutes.

The FDA granted “emergency use authorization” to Cepheid, a California company that makes a rapid molecular test for the coronavirus. Getting results in 45 minutes would be far quicker than the current situation in which tests typically are sent to central reference labs that can take days to deliver results.

The FDA authorization covers “patient care settings,” including doctors’ offices, but initially will be used primarily by hospitals and emergency departments, the company said.

The specimen can be collected either by a nasal swab or by a saline wash using a small catheter. Neither is particularly comfortable, but the advantage of the wash is that it doesn’t require swabs, which are in short supply.

Trump Awaits Results After Testing For Coronavirus

ABC News reports:

Donald Trump said on Saturday that he has taken a COVID-19 test and is awaiting the results.

Trump, who said on Friday he’d “most likely get tested,” said he’s unsure when his results will come back.

His temperature was taken, and he said it was “totally normal.”

On Friday, Trump said he’d “most likely” get tested after reports that multiple officials from Brazil who attended a dinner with Trump at Mar-a-Lago on Saturday tested positive for the virus.

In related news, Vice President Mike Pence announced today the U.S. travel ban currently in place for parts of Europe has been extended to the UK and Ireland.

A ban on some travel from Europe to the United States for the next 30 days was announced earlier this week by Trump. The original restrictions affected the area known as the Schengen zone and is made up of 26 countries including Italy, Spain, France, and Germany.

Andy Bell: HIV testing “saved my life”

Erasure singer Andy Bell is speaking out in support of Britain’s National HIV Testing Week

Bell learned he was HIV positive in 1998.

“When I was tested for the second time and found out I was HIV positive, I thought my world was going to collapse and cave in but thankfully this test actually saved my life.

“The sooner you find out whether you are positive (or negative), the sooner you can start your combination therapy and get the virus under control and live your life normally.”

Erasure’s latest release is their very first Christmas CD “Snowglobe” available now.
