Even though polls show support for marriage equality at over 70% in Ireland in advance of the big vote on May 22nd, the folks on the YES side (the good guys) are not taking anything for granted.
Poll results are high, but fears of a “Prop 8” kind of surprise is keeping the LGBT allies on their toes.
This new ad comes from Yes Equality. Sometimes the simplest appeals are the most powerful.
From Ireland’s Yes Equality campaign as the country prepares to vote on May 22nd to legalize same-sex marriage. Polls show strong support for marriage equality, but the Yes folks aren’t taking anything for granted.
Cork hurler, Conor Cusack, joined by fellow hurlers. They have battled for victory with their fellow teammates – gay and straight. Together they are calling for a level playing pitch in Irish society.

• Texas lawmakers vote this week on whether the state should officially defy the Supreme Court’s ruling on marriage.
• Alabama and Minnesota are debating bills to undermine marriage equality.
• At least one presidential candidate seems to think that if elected he could veto the Supreme Court. But a new survey shows that Americans are getting tired of these anti-gay shenanigans.
Anti-gay Iona Institute comes up with the same tired, failed reasons why Ireland should deny same-sex couples the right to marry on May 22nd.
And then there’s this parody video (using the exact same footage) already out on the interwebs, which I find MUCH more entertaining.

After winning the good fight in Oklahoma to overturn the state’s ban on same-sex marriage, a district judge has ruled in favor of the plaintiffs attorneys and ordered Tulsa County to pay almost $300,000 in fees and costs related to the county’s appeal of a lower court ruling.
Three attorneys for the couple had requested almost $400,000 in attorney fees and nearly $2,000 in costs.
Attorneys for Tulsa County argued that a more appropriate amount would be just over $100,000.
The 10th Circuit Court of Appeal ruled on July 18th that the ban was unconstitutional. In October, the same court ruled that Tulsa County would be financially responsible for the legal expenses incurred by the couple, Mary Bishop and Sharon Baldwin.
Rep. Steve King, speaking to Glenn Beck, says a SCOTUS ruling in favor of marriage equality will “throw this country into an endless trauma” similar to the issue of slavery.

“Dred Scott back in 1857, the court thought that they were going to solve the slavery question by telling Congress that they couldn’t free the slaves and telling the county that slaves could never be citizens,” King said. “They made that decision and that helped move us towards a civil war … Then in 1866, there was a civil rights act; that wasn’t enough to get the job done. There was the Thirteenth Amendment that freed the slaves. The Fourteenth Amendment that guaranteed them full citizenship and then we still were a hundred years before we got the Civil Rights Act.”
“If all of that to eliminate slavery, do they really think that they can do what they’re going to do to marriage, with one decision of the Supreme Court and society is going to accept that?” he asked. “Society is in for a long battle.”
He goes on to say the “public” will not accept a decision making same-sex marriage legal in all 50 states. However, poll after poll shows support for marriage equality is up to 61% across the US.
So, King is merely taking his own opinions and offering them as facts. False facts.

Newly-minted GOP presidential contender Dr. Ben Carson tells Newsmax that, should the Supreme Court rule in favor of marriage equality, the federal government doesn’t have to recognize that decision:
“First of all, we have to understand how the Constitution works, the president is required to carry out the laws of the land, the laws of the land come from the legislative branch,” Carson said. “So if the legislative branch creates a law or changes a law, the executive branch has a responsibly to carry it out. It doesn’t say they have the responsibility to carry out a judicial law.”
According to a new NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, 58% of Americans support a Supreme Court ruling in favor of marriage equality:
A total of 58 percent of Americans said that they favor a high court decision to eliminate bans against same sex marriage, with 44 percent of those saying they strongly favor such a result.
Thirty-seven percent of respondents said they oppose a court ruling in favor of the case’s LGBT plaintiffs, with 29 percent said they strongly oppose it.
You’ll remember another recent poll by ABC News/Washington Post in April showed support for same-sex marriage at 61%.
The Daily Show’s Jessica Williams took one more look at the haters who trolled outside the Supreme Court during last week’s oral arguments for marriage equality.
