Poll: 53% Of Americans Don’t Want Senate To Block Obama SCOTUS Nominee

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has stated that he and his fellow Senate Republicans feel Americans should have a voice in who selects the next Supreme Court justice.

Well, it looks like “the people” want President Obama to name a nominee, and they don’t want the Senate to block that nomination.

A new poll from Rasmussen Reports, a typically right-leaning polling outfit, shows that voters would rather Obama to fill the vacancy rather than waiting until after the next presidential election.

The poll found that 51 percent of likely voters believe that Obama nominate Scalia’s successor, and 53 percent believe the Senate should not “reject or refuse to consider” the nomination.

Only 35 percent favor the kind of obstruction advocated by McConnell.

In the last couple of days, at least three Republican Senators – Sen. Ron Johnson, Sen. Thom Tillis and Sen. Chuck Grassley – have signaled they might be open to hearings or a vote on an Obama nominee.

President Obama: “The Constitution Is Pretty Clear” On Nominating Supreme Court Justices

After several Senate Republicans stated they did not want to hold hearings on a new Supreme Court justice nominee this year, President Obama addressed those would delay the process of replacing recently deceased Justice Antonin Scalia:

“The Constitution is pretty clear about what is supposed to happen now,” Obama said at a press conference Tuesday at the U.S.-ASEAN summit in California.

“When there is vacancy on the Supreme Court, the president of the United States is to nominate someone, the Senate is to consider that nomination, and either they disapprove of that nominee or that nominee is elevated to the Supreme Court,” Obama continued. “Historically, this has not been viewed as a question. There’s no unwritten law that says it can only be done in off years, that’s not in the constitutional text.”

Obama stressed that there was “more then enough time” for the Senate to consider the nominee he submits for consideration.

President Obama To Ellen: “I’m So Proud Of You”

Stopping by ELLEN this afternoon, President Obama and Ellen DeGeneres talked on the evolution of LGBT rights, with the Queen of Talk becoming emotional about the President’s support.

Said DeGeneres, “I cannot tell you, or thank you enough, for what you’ve done for the gay community. So, thank you.”

President Obama responded in kind:

“It’s one of the things I’m proudest of because my whole political career has been based on the idea that we constantly want to include people and not exclude them. How do we bring more and more people into opportunity and success and feeling hopeful about their lives?”

“I will say, we were driving over here today — and I meant this. I said it to my staff — I said, as much as we’ve done with laws and ending ‘don’t ask, don’t tell,’ etc.. changing hearts and minds — I don’t think anybody has been more influential than you on that. I really mean that.

“You being willing to claim who you were – that suddenly empowers other people. And then suddenly, it’s your brother, it’s your uncle, it’s your best friend, it’s your coworkers. And then attitudes shift. And the law is followed, but it started with folks like you. I’m so proud of you.”

Hillary Clinton On Possible SCOTUS Appointment For Obama: “What A Great Idea!”

At a campaign stop in Deocorah, Iowa, yesterday, Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton was asked her thoughts on the idea of nominating President Barack Obama for the U.S. Supreme Court.

Clinton was quite bullish about the proposition.

Via ABC News:

“Wow, what a great idea. No one has ever suggested that to me, I love that, wow,” the Democratic presidential candidate responded. “He may have a few other things to do but I tell you that’s a great idea.”

Clinton went on to talk about how the next president could have to appoint up to three Supreme Court justices, but she then circled back.

“I would certainly take that under advisement,” she told the crowd of 450 people inside a ballroom at the Winn Hotel about a potential Justice Obama. “I mean he’s brilliant, and he can set forth an argument, and he was a law professor, so he’s got all the credentials.”

President Obama Announces Modest Set Of Executive Orders Addressing Gun Violence

President Obama held a press conference today announcing a modest set of executive orders that will close certain loopholes for gun buyers, and boost spending for ATF agents to enforce already existing gun laws.

The president had this to say at the presser:

“And although it is my strong belief that for us to get our complete arm around the problem Congress needs to act, what I asked my team to do is to see what more we could do to strengthen our enforcement” to curb illegal gun sales, Obama said in brief remarks to reporters after the meeting. “And the good news is, is that these are not only recommendations that are well within my legal authority and the executive branch, but they’re also ones that the overwhelming majority of the American people, including gun owners, support and believe in.”

Here’s a simple breakdown of what Obama is doing. You can read a full list of detail here.

1. Keep guns out of the wrong hands through background checks.
Currently, some gun sellers get around having to do background checks by selling online or at gun shows. The executive orders will ensure that If you’re in the business of selling firearms, you must get a license and conduct background checks.

Additionally, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is finalizing a rule to require background checks for violent criminals trying to buy some of the most dangerous weapons and other items through a trust, corporation, or other legal entity. Closing this loophole will help folks from dodging a background check. (That doesn’t sound like a bad thing, now, does it?)

2. Make our communities safer from gun violence.
The President’s FY2017 budget will include funding for 200 new ATF agents and investigators to help enforce our gun laws that are currently on the books.
ATF is finalizing a rule to ensure that dealers who ship firearms notify law enforcement if their guns are lost or stolen in transit. (Gee, that makes good sense, doesn’t it?)

3. Increase mental health treatment and reporting to the background check system.
The Department of Health and Human Services is finalizing a rule to remove unnecessary legal barriers preventing States from reporting relevant information about people prohibited from possessing a gun for specific mental health reasons.

4. Shape the future of gun safety technology.
The President has directed the Departments of Defense, Justice, and Homeland Security to conduct or sponsor research into gun safety technology. If we can create a child-proof aspirin bottle, surely we can come up with a gun that kids can’t accidentally kill themselves with.

Now, to hear Republicans scream, you’d think the president just ordered the National Guard to go round up law-abiding citizens guns.

From the New York Times:

On “Fox News Sunday,” former Gov. Jeb Bush of Florida said Mr. Obama’s “first impulse is always to take rights away from law-abiding citizens.” Donald Trump told CBS’s “Face the Nation,” “I don’t like anything having to do with changing our Second Amendment.” Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey, also on “Fox News Sunday,” dismissed the orders as “illegal” and called Mr. Obama, among other things, a “petulant child,” a “king” and a “dictator.”

That could not be further from the truth. The reason for the wailing is not about these executive orders. The gun nuts mostly don’t even know what’s being proposed. And the ones who do are acting out because they say “it’s a  slippery slope” and that any rational set of common sense actions will lead to the government taking guns away from law-abiding gun owners, WHICH has never been proposed.

Before anyone goes and whines about the 2nd Amendment being trampled on, go read the actual executive orders. Nothing here but closing loopholes and spending more money enforcing what’s already on the books.

Watch part of the announcement below:

President Obama Will Announce New Gun Control Measures Via Executive Order This Week

President Obama and the White House have announced that the president will unveil new gun control measures via executive order in the next few days.,

Obama, who has expressed deep frustration about U.S. gun control regulations after a series of mass shootings at schools and other places during his presidency, met with U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch on Monday to discuss gun control measures that do not require congressional approval.

Obama acknowledged that his planned initiatives will not solve every violent crime or prevent every mass shooting, but he said they could “potentially save lives.”

The president explained that he had received a report about his options on executive action, and the recommendations are “well within” his legal authority. He added that he is “confident” the recommended actions are “entirely consistent” with the Second Amendment right to bear arms.

Stocks for gun companies rose sharply ahead of Obama’s announcement.

This Photo Is Driving The Tea People Insane

JoeMyGod points out Obama’s “zero fucks to give” expression is driving the far-right idiots out of their minds.

The image was tweeted out from the @barackobama account with the comment, “Suit up—it’s President Obama’s final State of the Union. Say you’ll tune in: http://ofa.bo/s9ZA”

I personally love how Obama has let go of trying to be reasonable with the Teabaggers. He spent way too much time early in his administration attempting to meet them halfway.
