Matt Baume On Matt Damon’s Statement That Actors Should Keep Sexuality Secret

Matt Damon, while promoting his new movie The Martian made mention to The Guardian of how he sees the effect of coming out on the careers of gay actors:

“I think it must be really hard for actors to be out publicly,” he continues. “But in terms of actors, I think you’re a better actor the less people know about you period. And sexuality is a huge part of that. Whether you’re straight or gay, people shouldn’t know anything about your sexuality because that’s one of the mysteries that you should be able to play.”

Matt Baume has his own take on those comments:

Matt Damon told an interviewer this week that actors should keep their sexuality secret whether straight or gay, which is a little hypocritical considering he’s an open book when it comes to his heterosexuality.

I don’t think he’s a homophobe, but imposing a double standard on gay actors is just wrong.

Out Actor Chad Allen Says Goodbye To The Actor Life

Out actor Chad Allen has spent his entire life in the public eye, having starred in My Two Dads and Our House; Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman; General Hospital: Night Shift, and films as Save Me.

As he looks to finishing a PhD in Psychology, the 40-year-old Chad has decided to take his life away from the spotlight:

“I plan on being much less public, finishing my doctorate in clinical psychology, writing, working in private practice and maybe teaching some. And getting to finally try living somewhere besides New York and LA! obviously I’ve been tied to those because of the business.”

Short Film: “Gay Men On Screen: A Place For Us”

In the span of five minutes, editor Manuel Betancourt explores the diversity and progress (or not) gays have made on the big and small screens.

From the editor:

How are gay men depicted in mainstream culture? From flaming sissies to AIDS victims, from sex-crazed lotharios to queer villains, the tropes that have thus far characterized gay men on screen have been few though they’ve increasingly become more varied, showcasing the diversity in our community.

Showcasing scenes from Angels in America, The Normal Heart, In & Out, Brokeback Mountain, as well as older films like The Maltese Falcon and Rope, this supercut compiles a representative sample of the ways gay men have been portrayed on screen.

Wentworth Miller to guest on new CW series The Flash as villain

Hunky and handsome Wentworth Miller has pretty much been AWOL from acting since the wrap of his four seasons of Prison Break in 2009.  Other than a couple of guest spots on shows like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and House MD, there’s not been much opportunity to take in Miller’s considerable talents on screen.

But now we get news that he will guest this coming fall on the new super-hero series The Flash as one of the Flash’s biggest villains – Leonard Snart aka “Captain Cold.”

From EW:

The freeze-gun-touting villain is one of Barry Allen/The Flash’s biggest adversaries in the DC Comics, and is the leader of the Rogues—a group of his enemies.

Miller will guest star as the character in the fourth episode of the show’s debut season this fall. “We’ll be seeing his origin and the origin of the Rogues,” said executive producer Greg Berlanti.

Since the end of Prison Break, Miller has focused on writing and penned the screenplay for the film Stoker which was released as a feature film.

Miller came out as gay last year.  In a recent interview he was quoted as saying, ‘I was out to a handful of people in my twenties, and once I hit 30, I was out to family and friends. But professionally, I was feeding a fantasy. I created this air of “We don’t address that thing.”‘
