Obamacare enrollment passes 6 million mark

ObamaCare enrollment figures are on a sharp upward trajectory in March, with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announcing Thursday that 6 million people have enrolled with four days to go before the March 31 deadline.

That means 1 million people have enrolled in the last 10 days, and 1.8 million have enrolled so far in March. That nearly equals the roughly 2 million who enrolled in January and February combined.

The 6 million enrollees hits the Congressional Budget Office forecast, which was reduced from 7 million because of early troubles with HealthCare.gov.

President Obama takes responsibility for bumpy roll-out of Obamacare

In response to a bumpy rollout of  Obamacare, President Obama announced today that he would allow insurers to extend policies that have been canceled for one year even if they do not comply with the law.

Originally, in presenting the Affordable Care Act, the president promised Americans that “if you like your current policy, you can keep it.”

But a problem with that approach became apparent when insurers were required to cover about ten or so specific items in every healthcare policy.  This was done to make comparing policies easier for consumers, and to make health insurance better across the board by including some preventative measures, etc.

Some policies currently in use by consumers did not include these provisions. And by not being ACA compliant, those policies were being cancelled and replaced with updated versions.  Thus – the surprise for some consumers not being able to “keep the policy” they currently have.

Also plaguing the roll-out of the program has been a website that has suffered from multiple glitches.  The president took responsibility for the problems today at a press appearance:

Obama said he “fumbled” the debut of the Affordable Care Act and let down Democratic supporters who put their political careers on the line to back the president’s signature domestic policy.

“There is no doubt that our failure to roll out the ACA smoothly has put a burden on Democrats, whether they’re running or not, because they stood up and supported this,” Obama said. “I feel deeply responsible for making it harder for them, rather than easier for them.”

President Obama to House GOP – Government shutdown will hurt real people right away

President Obama placed the blame squarely on the decisions and actions of the House Republicans for what looks to be an imminent federal government shutdown.

From USA Today:

President Obama blamed an imminent government shutdown on House Republicans Monday, and said his health care plan is “moving forward” despite GOP efforts to de-fund it.

“You can’t shut it down,” Obama said of the law at the White House. Obama also said a partial government shutdown — which would start at midnight unless there is an 11th hour deal — will damage economic recovery and hurt “real people right away.”

Obama said the shutdown will close federal offices, delay checks, close parks, and damage loan programs.

Meanwhile, Social Security, Medicare, mail, and public safety functions will continue despite the shutdown, Obama said. “The federal government is America’s largest employer,” Obama said. “These Americans are our neighbors.”

Accusing the Republicans of trying to re-fight last year’s election and the health care battles of 2009-10, Obama called delay and de-funding efforts “the height of irresponsibility.”
