Mitt Romney says US should be adding 500K jobs a month which has only happened 4 times in 50 years

The American economy added 115,000 jobs in April, and while that number fell well short of expectations, it represents the 26th consecutive month of private sector job growth.  Remember, when President Obama took office the country was losing 800,000 jobs a month.  While disappointing, we are at least not losing jobs today.

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney appeared on Fox & Friends minutes after the release of the report to say that the economy should be growing at a much faster pace. The economy should be adding more than 500,000 jobs a month, Romney said:

ROMNEY: We should be seeing numbers in the 500,000 jobs created per month. This is way, way off from what should happen in a normal recovery.

Romney’s call for 500,000 jobs a month would certainly make for a faster economic recovery. I’d love to see it happen.

However, that sort of growth is hardly “normal,” as Romney claims.

There have only been 16 months since 1939 — and only four in the last 50 years — in which the economy added 500,000 jobs or more.

Rick Santorum on Mitt Romney’s job creation record

Yep – you knew this was coming, didn’t you? A whole primary season’s worth of material custom made for the Democrats and President Obama.

Thank you Rick Santorum for doing our homework.

Btw – Rick Santorum will be campaigning for Mitt Romney soon. At that point I’ll be very confused on who the “flip-flopper” is…

Obama campaign takes on the lies in the GOP’s latest attack ad

Stephanie Cutter, Deputy Campaign Manager, shares the facts about Big Oil’s latest attack.

“Hi I’m Stephanie Cutter I’m the Deputy Campaign Manager here at Obama for America and I wanted to arm you with the facts about the latest attach from Big Oil. You may have heard of the Koch brothers they’re secretive oil billionaires bankrolling Republican campaigns and now they’re backing Mitt Romney. Pretty simple reason for this, President Obama would take away billions of dollars in unnecessary oil tax breaks –Mitt Romney would protect them.

So now they’re spending six million dollars on an ad that is so blatantly false the Washington Post said that they have no shame.

Let’s get the facts out because it’s important that you guys know the truth. President Obama has helped create hundreds of thousands of clean energy jobs. Projects in all 50 states. And the way these oil billionaires and their front group completely ignore the truth is breathtaking.

Let’s take some crazy examples from their attack ad. They claim the administration gave money to build electric cars in Finland. No, the Department of Energy’s funding was specifically for U.S. jobs at U.S. facilities. Sure enough the company is employing 700 workers in California and their planning to build a plant in Delaware.

Okay another ridiculous claim: they said we sent money to China to build traffic lights. That’s wrong again. Those traffic lights were built here, in this country, and helped expand our light manufacturing industry in this country.

They said we gave money to a company building solar plants in Mexico. Nope. And again, our money is going to a solar plant here in America with American workers.

These guys are going to say whatever it takes to tear down the President. They will literally say anything. They oppose expanding clean energy. They oppose higher fuel efficiency standards for cars and trucks.

So we’re going to call their BS when we see it. And we need your help to call them on it too and to set the record straight.

So share this, Tweet it, Facebook it. I keep hearing about Tumblr and whatever that is please use that too. And thank you, for all of your help.”

Mitt Romney’s openly gay foreign policy spokesman resigns

Richard Grenell, Mitt Romney’s recently appointed Foreign Policy and National Security spokeman, has resigned after being on the receiving end of a wave of uproar from anti-gay conservatives.

Grenell’s official statement:

“I have decided to resign from the Romney campaign as the Foreign Policy and National Security Spokesman. While I welcomed the challenge to confront President Obama’s foreign policy failures and weak leadership on the world stage, my ability to speak clearly and forcefully on the issues has been greatly diminished by the hyper-partisan discussion of personal issues that sometimes comes from a presidential campaign. I want to thank Governor Romney for his belief in me and my abilities and his clear message to me that being openly gay was a non-issue for him and his team.”

Grenell’s homosexuality and support for marriage equality opposed Romney’s position on the issue.

Figures like American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer called into question how his placement reflected Mitt Romney’s actual views on homosexuals and Grenell’s own inability to separate himself from the “homosexual agenda.” Fischer stated that “you cannot separate religious liberty from the issue of the homosexual agenda. In fact, the homosexual agenda represents the single greatest threat to religious liberty and association in America today.”

Michelangelo Signorile wrote for the Huffington Post:

Actually, I believe this is a big win for progressives and for gay journalists and commentators, as well. We drew out the conservative leaders in addition to Fischer, like Family Research Council’s Tony Perkins, Gary Bauer, and other commentators on NationalReview.com and The Daily Caller, by bringing forth and continually highlighting the true facts about Grenell, which, to most Americans, are completely acceptable, but which, in the eyes of the evangelical right, make him a radical homosexual. As I wrote in a post last week, Grenell isn’t just gay, like some other gay Republicans who stay quiet about their homosexuality. He’s a gay man who very publicly expressed that he wants to get married to another man and who believes President Obama isn’t adequate on LGBT rights.

Why is it this a win? Because Grenell was being used for cover by a candidate with abhorrently anti-gay positions, a man who has promised to “propose and promote” a federal marriage amendment if elected president. I don’t buy the argument made by some that it was a measure of progress that Romney hired a gay man as his foreign policy spokesperson when he’s using that gay man to make himself appear moderate to independents while promising the GOP base that he’ll make gay people into second-class citizens. Actual progress in the GOP will come when their presidential candidates stop bowing to bigots and refuse to sign their extremist pledges. Otherwise, it’s all window dressing.

The Romney camp expressed their disappointment in Grenell’s resignation, stating:

“We are disappointed that Ric decided to resign from the campaign for his own personal reasons. We wanted him to stay because he had superior qualifications for the position he was hired to fill.”

Mitt Romney: “Borrow from your parents”

Mitt Romney’s advice to young people who want to start a business: Borrow money from your parents.

At a “lecture” for students at Otterbein University in Ohio today, Mitt Romney told students that, his friend, Jimmy John, started a business by borrowing $20,000 from his parents at a low interest rate. Romney suggested anyone in the audience could do the same:

This kind of devisiveness, this attack of success, is very different than what we’ve seen in our country’s history. We’ve always encouraged young people: Take a shot, go for it, take a risk, get the education, borrow money if you have to from your parents, start a business.

This shows how out of touch with middle America Mitt Romney is. He assumes everyone’s parents have $20,000 of disposable income laying around to loan their children.

I know Mitt’s dad had money – whether he gave any to Mitt or not, Mitt seems to think everyone has at least that laying around.

Another strike out Mitt.

Mitt Romney on the Boy Scouts

The Boy Scouts of America’s habit of discriminating against gay members and troop leaders is again in the spotlight thanks to the allegedly patriotic group’s decision to ban lesbian Jen Tyrrell from heading her son’s group.

Hoping to keep the issue center stage, and put the squeeze on strategically anti-gay Republican Mitt Romney, GLAAD is pointing to video of the presidential candidate backing gay Scouts inclusion in 1994, when he was running for senator against Ted Kennedy.

Says Romney in the clip, “I believe that the Boy Scouts of America does a wonderful service for this country. I support the right of the Boy Scouts of America to decide what it wants to do on that issue. I feel that all people should be able to participate in the Boy Scouts regardless of their sexual orientation.”
