Five year old Disney Channel star receives death threats

After the Disney Channel program introduced a lesbian couple as characters on the show “Good Luck Charlie,” the show’s five year old star received death threats on her Instagram fan page:

Talerico’s show, Good Luck Charlie, introduced the two characters, Susan and Cheryl, in an episode aired on Jan. 26.

Talerico’s real-life mother, Claire, notified Disney security after someone began posting messages on the actress’ Instagram account saying, “Die Mia, F*cking Die in hell! Kill yourself, you deserve to die.”

Police are currently investigating the threats.

The last episode of the series airs later this month after a 100 episode run.

California caterer refuses to service gay wedding based on religious convictions

Kama Kaina and Mathew Rivera

Here we go again.

On the grounds that doing so would violate her religious beliefs, a California caterer has refused to service a gay couple’s wedding reception.

The Advocate reports:

On November 26, Kama Kaina contacted Janet Zimmerman Catering with a request to cater his wedding to his longtime partner, Mathew Rivera. Zimmerman, who had been recommended by the couple’s planned venue in Big Bear, Calif., initially agreed. But several hours later, she sent an email expressing a change of heart because of her “Christian beliefs.”

“Thank you for contacting me in regards to your upcoming wedding,” Zimmerman wrote to Kaina, according to an email forwarded to The Advocate. “I really appreciate that you were honest with me and gave me a heads up that this would be a same sex marriage. I hope that you will also appreciate when I am honest with you when I say that catering your wedding would comprise [sic] my Christian beliefs and I will be unable to accept this job. I am sure that you will be able to find someone who will better suit your needs.”

I realize that this is discriminatory, but after so many of these stories I’m of a mind that we should just let the community know about these folks who don’t want to provide services to LGBT weddings, and then make sure we spread the word about companies that ARE happy to work with LGBT events. Make sure that the good guys get credit for their open nature.

And once we know who the haters are, leave them alone. Who wants to deal with people like that anyway?

I would like to know if Zimmerman is so devout about EVERY biblical teaching, or if it’s just the gay issues that “compromise” her Christian beliefs…

India reinstates colonial era law making homosexuality illegal

In a staggering backward step for India as the country tries to position itself as a major power in the world, homosexuality has been re-criminalized in India.  The colonial era law was reinstated after the Supreme Court today reversed a 2009 ruling by the Delhi High Court and declared that only the national legislature can legalize gay sex.

From Reuters:

India’s Supreme Court on Wednesday reinstated a ban on gay sex in the world’s largest democracy, following a four-year period of decriminalization that had helped bring homosexuality into the open in the socially conservative country.

In 2009 the Delhi High Court ruled unconstitutional a section of the penal code dating back to 1860 that prohibits “carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal” and lifted the ban for consenting adults.

The Supreme Court threw out that decision, saying only parliament could change Section 377 of the penal code, widely interpreted to refer to homosexual sex. Violation of the law can be punished with up to 10 years in jail. The move shocked rights activists around the world, who had expected the court simply to rubber-stamp the earlier ruling. In recent years, India’s Supreme Court has made progressive rulings on several issues such as prisoners’ rights and child labor.

European Union commissioner to boycott Sochi Olympics over LGBT discrimination laws

Yahoo News is reporting that EU commissioner Viviane Reding says she will not attend the Sochi Olympics due to discriminatory treatment of minorities (read: gay people) in Russia:

European Union commissioner Viviane Reding said she would not be attending the Sochi 2014 Olympics in February over what she said was Russia’s treatment of minorities, joining German President Joachim Gauck in an open snub to the host nation.

“I will certainly not go to Sochi as long as minorities are treated the way they are under the current Russian legislation,” Reding, EU Commissioner for Justice, Citizenship and Fundamental Rights, said in a tweet on Tuesday.

While it was unclear whether Reding had been invited or would have gone as an EU representative or a private citizen, her decision to openly oppose Russia’s recent legislation was the most vocal statement by a politician to date.

Colorado baker says he’d rather go to jail than bake same-sex wedding cake

The Colorado baker who was found guilty of discrimination on public accommodation laws says he feels forced to participate in same-sex weddings were he to bake a cake for a gay or lesbian couple’s ceremony.

Jack Phillips lawyer falsely puts out a red flag in the interview that people in Phillips’ position face jail time if they refuse to treat all Americans equally. The fact is there are no criminal sanctions in any state for such violations. Phillips faces a fine and possibly losing his business license if he were to refuse to pay the penalty.

House Speaker John Boehner: Gays don’t face any discrimination in the workplace

House Speaker John Boehner addressed the issue of bringing ENDA to a vote in the House today.   Clearly the man is misinformed about LGBT employment rights:

“I am opposed to discrimination of any kind in the work place and any place else.

“But I think this legislation that I’ve dealt with as chairman of the Educational Workforce Committee long before I was back into leadership, is unnecessary and would provide a basis for frivolous lawsuits.

“People are already protected in the work place. So I am, I’m opposed to continuing this.

“Listen, I understand people have different opinions on this issue and I respect those opinions but it is someone who worked in this employment law area for all of my years in the statehouse and all of my years here, I see no basis or no need for this.”

Virginia: Governor-elect Terry McAuliffe to sign executive order banning discrimination against LGBT state employees

Ah, what a difference an election makes.

As the new governor of Virginia, Terry McAuliffe’s first executive order will be to ban discrimination against LGBT state employees.

Via the Human Rights Campaign:

“In his first day as Governor-elect, Terry McAuliffe has declared a new day for LGBT equality in the Commonwealth of Virginia,” said HRC National Field Director Marty Rouse. “Inclusion and equality won in yesterday’s election, while the politics of hate and discrimination were soundly defeated. We look forward to working with the governor-elect on moving Virginia forward.”

It should be noted that shortly after taking office in 2010, outgoing Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell refused to renew an executive order protected LGBT state employees from discrimination.

And why, you ask? Because he could find no evidence that such discrimination even existed.

Good riddance.

President Obama: ENDA ought to be the law of the land

President Obama pens an op-ed for Huffington Post in support of ENDA

President Obama has written an op-ed published on Huffington Post in support of ENDA.  Here’s an excerpt:

Here in the United States, we’re united by a fundamental principle: we’re all created equal and every single American deserves to be treated equally in the eyes of the law. We believe that no matter who you are, if you work hard and play by the rules, you deserve the chance to follow your dreams and pursue your happiness. That’s America’s promise.

That’s why, for instance, Americans can’t be fired from their jobs just because of the color of their skin or for being Christian or Jewish or a woman or an individual with a disability. That kind of discrimination has no place in our nation. And yet, right now, in 2013, in many states a person can be fired simply for being lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.

As a result, millions of LGBT Americans go to work every day fearing that, without any warning, they could lose their jobs — not because of anything they’ve done, but simply because of who they are.

It’s offensive. It’s wrong. And it needs to stop, because in the United States of America, who you are and who you love should never be a fireable offense.

That’s why Congress needs to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, also known as ENDA, which would provide strong federal protections against discrimination, making it explicitly illegal to fire someone because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. This bill has strong bipartisan support and the support of a vast majority of Americans. It ought to be the law of the land.

“Marriage and Religous Freedom Act” sponsored by 58 House Republicans = license to discriminate

Rep. Paul Labrador (R-ID), along with 57 other Republican House members, has introduced the “Marriage And Religious Freedom Act.”

Speaking to The Washington Post, Labrador said he began drafting the legislation after the Supreme Court’s June 26 decision out of fear opponents of same-sex marriage could begin to be targeted by the federal government.

“Some people looked at overturning it, or doing a constitutional amendment. I looked at the immediate need, which is the protection of religious institutions and churches, so that they can continue practicing their religion as they see fit,” Labrador said.

The bill, basically a license to discriminate against gays and lesbians, would ban the federal government from taking any “adverse action” against the opponents of same-sex marriage.

Ian Thompson, American Civil Liberties Union legislative representative, says the bill seeks to “reincarnate DOMA and, in doing so, perpetuate discrimination against lawfully married same-sex couples and their children.”

The anti-gay National Organization for Marriage supports the legislation:

“This is a critical piece of legislation to protect religious liberty as a cornerstone of our country and deserves our full support,” said Brian Brown, NOM’s president. “Efforts to redefine marriage pose a direct threat to the free exercise of religion. This legislation would protect the right of organizations to communicate their views about marriage without threat that the tax code will be used to punish them. We applaud Congressman Labrador and his colleagues for their leadership on this important issue.”

The bill also has two socially conservative Democrats: Rep. Mike McIntyre (D-NC), and Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-IL).
