Department Of Justice Officially Announces No Charges Against George Zimmerman

The Department of Justice has officially announced there will be no charges filed against George Zimmerman for the 2012 shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

From ABC News:

ABC News has learned Martin’s family will soon be notified that the Justice Department will not be filing charges against George Zimmerman, who shot the 17-year-old after a confrontation in 2012. Thursday marks three years to the day since Martin was killed.

Federal prosecutors concluded there is not sufficient evidence to prove Zimmerman, a neighborhood watchman in Sanford, Fla., intentionally violated Martin’s civil rights, sources told ABC News.

Data: Strong, Common-Sense Gun Laws Save Lives

According to data made available from 2013, the states with the highest gun death rates allow Open Carry without a permit.

The states with the lowest gun death rates have strong gun violence protection laws.

I believe in the right to gun ownership.  But I don’t see anything wrong with background checks.

You read from activists and politicians on a range of issues that the country should follow the will of the people. Poll after poll shows support in the 70-80% range across the US for background checks.

With support THAT high, why are our elected officials not passing these common sense protections?

Cleveland Police Union Demands Apology From Cleveland Browns

At Sunday’s Cleveland Browns football game, Browns wide receiver Andrew Hawkins made headlines by wearing a T-shirt in pre-game warmups that read “Justice for Tamir Rice and John Crawford III.”

Twelve year old Rice was shot and killed by Cleveland police last month playing with a toy rifle; 22 year old Crawford was shot by police at a Wal-Mart while holding an air rifle.

Now, Cleveland Police Union President Jeff Follmer has demanded the Cleveland Browns apologize for the T-shirt’s appearance.

“It’s pretty pathetic when athletes think they know the law,” the statement read, as quoted by WEWS. “They should stick to what they know best on the field. The Cleveland Police protect and serve the Browns stadium and the Browns organization owes us an apology.”

The Browns later issued a statement saying that the organization respects both the work of the Cleveland police department and their own players’ right to protest.

“We have great respect for the Cleveland Police Department and the work that they do to protect and serve our city,” the statement read, as quoted by the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. “We also respect our players’ rights to project their support and bring awareness to issues that are important to them if done so in a responsible manner.”

That’s what Rob Kinnison did when he learned that the group Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is pushing Kroger grocery stores to revise their policy of letting people like Rob Kinnison go shopping with locked and loaded assault rifles on their persons.

Guns don’t kill people, 9 year old girls do

A gun instructor has been shot and killed by a nine year old girl who was getting a lesson on how to use an Uzi.

Charles Vacca, 39, of Lake Havasu City was shot Monday morning, airlifted to a medical center in Las Vegas and pronounced dead shortly before 9 p.m., the sheriff’s office said.

Vacca was working at the Bullets and Burgers outdoor range in White Hills, about 60 miles southeast of Las Vegas, when the accident occurred. The girl and her parents were at the range while on vacation, a sheriff’s spokeswoman told the Los Angeles Times.

He was standing next to the girl, instructing her how to use the Uzi, when she pulled the gun’s trigger and the recoil sent the weapon over her head, causing him to be shot, the sheriff’s office said.

“This is a rarity for something like this to happen,” the spokeswoman said.

You have to be 18 to join the armed forces; you have to be 21 to drink in most states; you have to be 16 to drive a car legally in most states; but with no regulation whatsoever, you can hand an Uzi to a 9 year old girl?

FYI – Bullets and Burgers hosts children’s birthday parties.

Because, what could possibly go wrong?

Does open carry in a Starbucks make you a freedom fighter?

Retired Air National Guard veteran Tom Young has an excellent essay on the subject of gun advocates and questions why they choose to “defend freedom” in a coffee shop versus signing up for a combat zone:

There are those in the open carry movement who have spent time in the military, and I thank them for their service. But there are others who need to realize that bringing a Glock into Starbucks doesn’t make you a freedom fighter.

So, if you want to carry a weapon and wear tactical clothing, here’s an idea: Go see a recruiter. The weapons and cool clothes are free.

You might find serving a challenge, though. It’ll take more commitment than shooting a few holes in a paper target whenever you feel like it. It’ll take more time than slapping a “Don’t Tread on Me” sticker on your windshield.

You’ll take an oath to follow lawful orders and defend the Constitution. All of it, not just the parts you like.

And you won’t get to intimidate other Americans; you might have to face real enemies.
