Minnesota: Jury Rules Cop Not Guilty In Shooting Of Philando Castile

A jury on Friday found the Minnesota police officer who fatally shot a black motorist during a traffic stop last year not guilty of second-degree manslaughter.

St. Anthony Police Department officer Jeronimo Yanez was charged after he fatally shot Philando Castile, 32, last July. The aftermath was streamed on social media by Castile’s girlfriend, and the incident drew national attention and led to weeks of protests in St. Paul and Minneapolis.

Yanez had testified that he was afraid for his life and that Castile did not follow his orders.

In the courtroom on Friday, people could be heard cursing as the verdict was read, and one woman sobbed. Castile’s mother, Valerie Castile, abruptly left the court after the announcement and before court was formally dismissed.

The shooting in the St. Paul suburb of Falcon Heights, like similar incidents across the United States, fueled public debate about the appropriate use of force by law enforcement against minorities.

Sen. Bernie Sanders Denounces Shooting Attack On Congress Members

According to reports, the alleged shooter in this morning’s attack on a Congressional baseball practice, that left five injured including Republican Congressman Steve Scalise, was apparently a volunteer for Sen. Bernie Sanders’ campaign last year.

Sen. Sanders immediately issued a statement denouncing the violence.

“I have just been informed that the alleged shooter at the Republican baseball practice is someone who apparently volunteered on my presidential campaign.

“I am sickened by this despicable act. Let me be as clear as I can be. Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms.

“Real change can only come about through nonviolent action, and anything else runs against our most deeply held American values.

“My hopes and prayers are that Representative Scalise, congressional staff and the Capitol Police Officers who were wounded make a quick and full recovery. I also want to thank the Capitol Police for their heroic actions to prevent further harm.”

While some, like Donald Trump Jr., immediately jumped to politicize this morning’s shooting at a Congressional baseball practice, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan stood on the floor of the House this morning calling for unity saying, “An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us.”

Congressman Steve Scalise, Staffer And Capitol Hill Police Officers Shot At Baseball Practice For Charity Game

Rep. Steve Scalise, a congressional staffer and members of the congressional police force were shot Wednesday morning in Alexandria, Virginia, in what sources are calling an apparent “deliberate attack.”

President Donald Trump said the gunman had been killed. Federal law enforcement sources identified the shooter as James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois. Hodgkinson is 66.

Scalise, the third ranking member of House Republican leadership as the majority whip, appeared to have been shot in the hip and it appeared two Capitol Hill police agents were shot, Rep. Mo Brooks told CNN. A congressional staffer was also injured. Matt Mika, a lobbyist for Tyson Foods who sometimes practices with the team, was also identified as one of the victims, and Sen. Jeff Flake said Mika was the most seriously injured.

As of 9:45 a.m. ET, Scalise was in stable condition but undergoing surgery, according to a statement from his office.

The shooting took place at a practice for the GOP congressional baseball team. According to both congressional and law enforcement sources, the shooting appears to be a “deliberate attack.”

According to Rep. Eric Swalwell, the charity baseball game will continue as scheduled.

For those who may not know, the game has been played annually since 1909. The event benefits the Washington Boys And Girls Club and other DC charities. Last year the game raised over $500,000.

To date, Republican and Democrats are tied with 39 wins each.

Colorado Shooter In Court: “I Am Guilty. There Will Be No Trial. I Am A Warrior For The Babies.”

In case anyone had any doubt as to why the Colorado Planned Parenthood shooter went on his wild spree last week.

In a court appearance to determine formal charges, accused Planned Parenthood gunman Robert Dear reportedly announced his guilt–and strongly hinted at a motive. “I am guilty. There will be no trial. I am a warrior for the babies,” Dear reportedly exclaimed before the charges were read.

Reporter Rick Sallinger with our partners at KCNC left the courtroom early to report the outburst, which is how 11 News obtained this information. Our reporters remain in the courtroom, where phones and laptops are not allowed.

Sallinger also reports that that Dear is refusing to meet with attorney after Wednesday, and stated, “This is my life.” If convicted, Dear could face a minimum sentence of life on prison or a maximum sentence of death. The DA’s office has several weeks to decide whether to seek the death penalty or not.

President Obama: We Will Not Be Terrorized

In this week’s address, the President offered his condolences to the families and community of the victims of the San Bernardino shooting.

Obama correctly notes that this latest mass shooting was “another tragic reminder that here in America it’s way too easy for dangerous people to get their hands on a gun.”

“Right now, people on the No-Fly list can walk into a store and buy a gun. That is insane. If you’re too dangerous to board a plane, you’re too dangerous, by definition, to buy a gun.”
