Alabama Lawmaker: Gay Marriage Will Cost Too Much

Alabama state Sen. Del Marsh

Usually, the arguments against same-sex marriage take the approach of inciting to riot via “polygamy,” “incest,” Bible scripture, morality, etc…

But one GOP Alabama lawmaker is going right for the pocketbook approach – “Gay marriage will cost us money!”

Via ThinkProgress:

“You gotta look at the financial aspect of this as well,” State Sen. Del Marsh (R) told radio host Dale Jackson last week. “Let’s face it. If gay marriage is approved, I assume that those types of unions, those people would be entitled to Social Security benefits, insurance. Where does it end?”

Well, glad you asked Mr. Marsh.

It seems the Congressional Budget Office weighed the potential increased spending on Social Security and other benefits against increased savings from other programs like Medicare and Medicaid back in 2004.

The results of the study found that if every state were to legalize marriage equality, the federal budget would see a boost of approximately $10 billion over 10 years.

Additionally, specific to Alabama, the Williams Institute found that same-sex marriage would add $21.7 million to Alabama’s economy over the first three years.

So, hey – more money in the economy? What Republican doesn’t like that?

Unemployment Drops To 5.6% As Economy Adds 252K Jobs

From NPR:

The U.S. economy added 252,000 jobs in December, capping a 12-month stretch of job growth unmatched since 1999, according to the Labor Department. In a separate survey, the department says that the unemployment rate dipped to 5.6 percent from 5.8 percent the previous month.

The department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that job gains occurred in professional and business services, construction, food and drinking establishments, health care and manufacturing.

NPR’s John Ydstie, reporting on Morning Edition ahead of this morning’s announcement, says that it’s been 15 years since job growth was so strong.

“[You] have to go all the way back to 1999, when companies were rapidly hiring IT workers to deal with the Y2K threat to computer systems. That year the economy added about 3.2 million new jobs,” John says.

The number of jobs created in October and November was also revised upward by 50,000 for the two months combined, according to BLS.

Mitch McConnell Takes Credit For US Economy After ONE Day As Senate Majority Leader

Just ONE day into his role as Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell (R-KY) takes credit for the good news on the American economy saying it’s all about the fact that Republican have a brand new majority in Congress:

“After so many years of sluggish growth, we’re finally starting to see some economic data that can provide a glimmer of hope; the uptick appears to coincide with the biggest political change of the Obama administration’s long tenure in Washington: the expectation of a new Republican Congress,” McConnell said on Wednesday. “So this is precisely the right time to advance a positive, pro-growth agenda.”

The Democratic National Committee thought the comment was more than hysterical, emailing a statement with the subject line “DNC to McConnell: Hahahahahahahahahahaha.”

Here’s the statement from DNC Communications Director Mo Elleithee:

Hahahahahahahahahahaha. That Mitch McConnell is one funny guy. He likes to remind people all the time that he’s not a scientist. Now we know he’s not a mathematician or an economist either.

The fact is, under President Obama we’ve had 57 straight months of private sector job growth leading to nearly 11 million jobs added.

All Republicans have given us is a government shutdown that cost the economy $24 billion.

I get why he wants to take credit for the economic recovery. But maybe he should first do something to help contribute to it.

US Economy Grows At Fastest Pace Since 2003

From CNN: Gross domestic product soared 5% on an annual basis in the third quarter, the government said on Tuesday.

To put that in perspective, it’s the strongest quarter of growth since 2003.

“Other than the first quarter’s weather-induced contraction, there’s no doubt the economy has been great this year,” said Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at BTIG.

Investors cheered the news, sending the stock market to record highs with the Dow crossing 18,000 for the first time ever.
