NFL Pushes Back On Trump’s Tweet That NFL “Demanding” Players To Stand During The National Anthem

The NFL on Wednesday slapped back at Donald Trump’s tweet that suggested league Commissioner Roger Goodell is “finally demanding” that players stand up during the national anthem.

The correction came after yesterday’s announcement that Goodell said he would meet with the league’s team owners to discuss a path forward regarding the current national debate about anthem protests.

As part of his announcement, Goodell shared that while the league believes “everyone should stand for the National Anthem,” no demand was placed on players to stand.

Additionally, the league proposed forming an “in-season platform” to allow players to promote social justice efforts.

But today, Donald Trump seemed to give the impression that Goodell and the NFL had announced an official change in terms of kneeling/standing during the national anthem.

Trump tweeted “It is about time that Roger Goodell of the NFL is finally demanding that all players STAND for our great National Anthem-RESPECT OUR COUNTRY.”

The NFL pushed back immediately.

“Commentary this morning about the Commissioner’s position on the Anthem is not accurate. As we said yesterday, there will be a discussion of these issues at the owners meeting next week. The NFL is doing the hard work of trying to move from protest to progress, working to bring people together,” the league said in a statement.

Trump Administration Reverses On Support Of Rainbow Flag Raising At Stonewall National Monument

Yet another slap from the Trump administration as the National Park Service has pulled support for today’s raising of the rainbow flag at the Stonewall National Monument in New York City.

In June of last year, President Obama issued a proclamation creating the Stonewall National Monument in New York City’s Greenwich Village. The event today would signify the first time the rainbow flag, the international symbol of the LGBTQ community, would fly on federal land.

The dedication of the monument was no small deal. It was attended by high level politicians and officials including Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, US Representative Carolyn Maloney, DOMA plaintiff Edie Windsor, Mayor Bill de Blasio, Representative Jerrold Nadler, City Councilmember Corey Johnson, National Park Service director Jonathan Jarvis, White House senior advisor Valerie Jarrett, State Senator Brad Hoylman, and Assemblymember Deborah Glick.

Now, however, it seems the National Park Service, under Secretary Ryan Zinke’s Department of the Interior, took notice of the pre-event publicity and has declared that the flagpole is not on federal land and therefore not the responsibility of the Park Service.

This is some petty, petty stuff, folks. Tax dollars were spent researching the location and legality of a flag pole.

From Andy Hamm of Gay City News:

The National Park Service’s Barbara Applebaum, who arranged the permit for the event, dropped out as a speaker at the ceremony — her office citing a schedule conflict — and organizers of the event said in a release that the Park Service dropped its sponsorship of the event for which it had issued the permit to veteran gay activist Michael Petrelis.

Ann Northrop, co-host of Gay USA, who will preside over the dedication, said, “This is an unbelievably petty, sleazy, transparent bit of cruelty by the Trump administration. Evidently, we are so filthy to them and their right-wing supporters that they can’t even be associated with a few yards of rainbow fabric.”

In abrupt turnabout, Park Service pulls out of Stonewall Monument ceremony, saying it’s not responsible for flagpole

Veteran gay activist Ken Kidd, one of the main organizers of the event, said, “This is emblematic of what’s happening in the country right now to LGBTQ Americans citizens. We’re being told at every turn — including Trump’s first decision to appoint Pence — that actions will be taken to make us second-class citizens again. The very idea that taxpayer dollars were spent researching a flagpole on a national monument when there are so many other things at stake in the country is an outrage. Some employee of the Park Service or Interior read that Newsweek preview article on this because Donald Trump’s name was mentioned by me. They are so thin-skinned and so bigoted that they were going to spite us and not let that Rainbow Flag fly on federal property.”

Mindy Anderson, chief of communications for National Parks of New York Harbor, told Hamm that the Park Service only recently learned that “the flagpole is not on federal property.”

“In good faith, because of working with the community, we raised the Rainbow Flag. So with our strong partnership with NYC Parks, we gifted the flag to them so they could continue to fly it,” Anderson added.

The Trump administration is so ardent in distancing itself from the event, the page for the monument hasn’t been updated since September 7.

Additionally, the National Park Services Facebook page, which is updated on a daily basis, does not list today’s event.

In any case, today’s event will still go on. Kidd told Gay City News, “What we had planned with great people from the National Park Service was a lovely, small-town all-American celebration of our rightful place as citizens and of Stonewall’s rightful place in the struggle for equality in the USA. Our plans are to continue with that celebration.”

More about today’s event via press release:

The event will be emceed by Gay USA television co-host Ann Northrop. Performers will include Telly Leung, who plays the title role in Disney’s “Aladdin on Broadway” and Cantor Steve Zeidenberg of Congregation Beit Simchat Torah. Speakers will be Leslie Cagan, co-organizer of the 1987 March on Washington for LGBT Rights, Kiara St. James, Executive Director of New York Transgender Advocacy Group, and LGBT and AIDS activist Michael Petrelis, who spearheaded this initiative.

“It is a victory for our Community to have these symbolic colors flying majestically over our Stonewall, designated as a National Monument by President Obama, even as our LGBTQ brothers and sisters are under attack by the current regime in power,” said Petrelis.

October 11 marks the thirtieth anniversary of the historic 1987 March on Washington for Lesbian & Gay Rights–when the NAMES Project AIDS Quilt was unfurled on the National Mall. The date also marks the annual National Coming Out Day, inviting the LGBTQ community to live their lives openly.

Donald Trump Challenges Secretary Of State To IQ Test, White House Backtracks On “Joke”

Earlier today, Donald Trump Trump took a shot at Secretary of State Rex Tillerson over his reportedly calling the president a “moron.”

“I think it’s fake news,” Trump said, “but if he did that, I guess we’ll have to compare IQ tests. And I can tell you who is going to win.”

Later, during a White House press briefing, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders declared it was a joke: “He made a joke. Maybe you guys should get a sense of humor and try it sometime.”

Trump has had a long-standing obsession with the idea of “IQ” going back to the campaign trail in 2015.

CNN put together this montage of stump speeches where Trump invoked his superior intellect several times.

Survey: Trump Has Lost Support In Every State Since Inauguration

Bad news for Donald Trump in the latest Morning Consult survey which shows Trump’s approval rating has failed to improve in a single state since Inauguration Day. And that includes those states he won easily last November

Based on 472,032 interviews of registered voters across each state and Washington, D.C., over 8 months from January 20 to September 26, and the survey provides insight into how Trump’s approval has changed each month since Inauguration Day.

That’s a very large survey sample, not just a few thousand.

Just a few samples from the survey:

In states where Trump won by the thinnest of margins, his approval has dropped significantly. This should really concern Team Trump as there will be no reelection if this trend continues:

• Michigan: -22% net percentage point change
• Wisconsin: -18%
• Pennsylvania: -16%
• North Carolina: -18%
• Arizona: -26%

Where Trump’s approval has dropped most since January:

• Illinois: -30 net percentage point change
• New York: -30%
• District of Columbia: -29%

Where Trump is most popular:

• Wyoming: +26% net approval
• West Virginia: +24%
• Alabama: +23%

Where Trump is least popular:

• District of Columbia: -60% net approval
• Hawaii: -33%
• Massachusetts: -31%

Sen. Bob Corker: White House Spends Every Single Day Trying To “Contain” Donald Trump

Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee

In a stunning interview with the New York Times, Republican Sen. Bob Corker shared that he has grave concerns about Donald Trump who acts “like he’s doing The Apprentice or something.”

In an extraordinary rebuke of a president of his own party, Mr. Corker said he was alarmed about a president who acts “like he’s doing ‘The Apprentice’ or something.”

“He concerns me,” Mr. Corker added. “He would have to concern anyone who cares about our nation.”

Mr. Trump poses such an acute risk, the senator said, that a coterie of senior administration officials must protect him from his own instincts. “I know for a fact that every single day at the White House, it’s a situation of trying to contain him,” Mr. Corker said in a telephone interview.

Without offering specifics, he said Mr. Trump had repeatedly undermined diplomacy with his Twitter fingers. “I know he has hurt, in several instances, he’s hurt us as it relates to negotiations that were underway by tweeting things out,” Mr. Corker said.

All but inviting his colleagues to join him in speaking out about the president, Mr. Corker said his concerns about Mr. Trump were shared by nearly every Senate Republican.

“Look, except for a few people, the vast majority of our caucus understands what we’re dealing with here,” he said, adding that “of course they understand the volatility that we’re dealing with and the tremendous amount of work that it takes by people around him to keep him in the middle of the road.”

As for the tweets that set off the feud on Sunday morning, Mr. Corker expressed a measure of powerlessness.

“I don’t know why the president tweets out things that are not true,” he said. “You know he does it, everyone knows he does it, but he does.”

That last line is actually quite amazing. A sitting senator from the president’s own party acknowledging his guy lies on a regular basis.

And apparently every Republican Senator thinks Trump is a serious threat to the country but stays silent because of politics or something.

Corker was fairly close to Trump during and right after the 2016 election. According to reports, he was considered for such high ranking positions in the Trump administration as Vice President and Secretary of State, but withdrew his name from consideration after conversations with Trump on foreign policy made him uneasy.

Corker announced recently that he will not seek reelection in 2018. Clearly, having no concerns about campaigning for votes has imbued him with a new sense of freedom to express himself.

It’s worth noting that with a slim two-vote margin in the Senate, Corker has 13 months left as a  U.S. Senator. Trump hurts himself and his policy proposals by attacking a member of his own party.

Trump Approval Numbers Crater To New Low In New AP Poll

More bad news for Donald Trump’s failing presidency as his approval rating has cratered to a new low of 32% in the most recent Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research survey.

From The Hill:

Thirty-two percent of Americans polled said they approved of Trump’s handling of his job nine months into his presidency, while 67 percent of those polled said they disapproved.

The president’s approval rating in the poll is down from 42 percent in March and 35 percent in June, AP-NORC said.

Trump also did not fare well among Americans who were asked if he understands their needs and problems.

Sixty-four percent of Americans said the president understands their needs “not very well” or “not very well at all.”

Sen. Bob Corker On Trump: “The White House Has Become An Adult Day Care Center”

Earlier this week, Sen. Bob Corker told reporters that some of Donald Trump’s closest advisers are responsible for tamping down the “chaos” in the White House.

“I think Secretary Tillerson, Secretary Mattis and Chief of Staff Kelly are those people that help separate our country from chaos,” Corker said.

So, it was clearly a matter of time before Trump would take to Twitter to lash out at the Republican senator from Tennessee who recently announced he would not seek reelection next year.

This morning Trump tweeted:

“Senator Bob Corker “begged” me to endorse him for re-election in Tennessee. I said “NO” and he dropped out (said he could not win without…..my endorsement). He also wanted to be Secretary of State, I said “NO THANKS.” He is also largely responsible for the horrendous Iran Deal! …Hence, I would fully expect Corker to be a negative voice and stand in the way of our great agenda. Didn’t have the guts to run!

And Corker responded beautifully:

Donald Trump Demands “Equal Time” From Late Night Talk Show Hosts

Donald Trump took to the Twitter airwaves this bright Saturday morning to bemoan how “unfair” it is that late night talk show hosts are always “anti-Trump.”

“Late Night host are dealing with the Democrats for their very “unfunny” & repetitive material, always anti-Trump! Should we get Equal Time?

“More and more people are suggesting that Republicans (and me) should be given Equal Time on T.V. when you look at the one-sided coverage?”

Of course, what the Trumpster doesn’t care to mention is there’s an entire news network devoted to pushing his point of view.

Plus, as president, he gets any and all the coverage he could want. He stands behind a microphone and everyone’s listening.

But the real problem here is that Trump clearly doesn’t understand what the “equal time” rule is.

The smart folks at ThinkProgress help us out.

This is not how the equal time rule works. The rule requires that, if a radio or television station gives a certain opportunity (say, an interview, a commercial, hosting a show) to one candidate, it must also offer that opportunity to “other such candidates for that office.” The idea is to prevent media companies and broadcast stations from providing only one candidate’s viewpoint to the people in an effort to influence elections.

If anyone is in a position to ask for equal time, it’s Rep. John Delaney (D-MD), the only candidate to declare he is running for president other than Trump.

So, “equal time” is about keeping things fair for candidates running for office.

Funny, Trump didn’t complain during the 2016 primary and general election about all the extra TV time he received on a daily basis.

Trump Mocks Hispanic Accent During “Hispanic Heritage Month” Ceremony

Donald Trump is clearly devoid of any modicum of respect when speaking about Puerto Rico, where millions of American citizens are woefully struggling in the aftermath of Hurrican Maria.

During a ceremony today commemorating “Hispanic Heritage Month,” President Trump laughingly mocked the Latino accent in saying “PUerto Rico,” laughing, and then saying it in his usual accent.

Between the glacial pace of aid to the U.S. territory and his Twitter feud with the mayor of San Juan, it’s crystal clear this is just a wink and a smile to his racist supporters.

Trump Covers Newsweek: “Does God Believe In Trump?”

Very interesting cover story in this week’s Newsweek exploring just how and when Donald Trump, who wasn’t very known for his “deeply held religious beliefs,” came to be so warmly embraced by white evangelicals.

From spotlighting Trump’s relationship with televangelist Paula White, to a 2011 meeting with religious leaders exploring a possible run for president, to the actual birth of the “Moral Majority” movement, the author connects the dots between white evangelicals and their king, Donald Trump.

An excerpt:

It’s now obvious that Trump got an extraordinary return on investment when he cozied up to evangelicals in 2011, but what did they see in him? His biography until quite late in life would seem to be antithetical to everything they believe. (Robert) Jones, of the Public Religion Research Institute, thinks the answer lies in the 2015 Supreme Court ruling legalizing gay marriage. “Local Democrats and progressives wildly underestimated the nuclear event that the same-sex marriage decision was for conservative white Christians,” he says. “It was so at the heart of their political engagement. They had pushed all their resources into the fight, and they lost decisively in courts and in public opinion.”

Among the many miracles Trump performed during his campaign was exploiting white conservative Christian fear. White Christians really are losing demographic ground, if not power. America won’t be theirs for much longer because they are a shrinking portion of the electorate. But, as Trump showed to astonishing effect, they still turn out to vote at higher rates than other, larger demographic groups. And that gives their views greater weight. In 2008, white evangelicals were 21 percent of the population but made up 26 percent of the vote, Jones says. In 2016, white evangelicals had slipped to 17 percent of the total population, but they still constituted 26 percent of voters. Jones calls the 2016 election their “time machine,” Christian fundamentalists’ chance to resurrect the public opinion of 2008, when just 40 percent of Americans supported gay marriage, not the 60 percent who do now.

America’s white Protestant fundamentalist Christians are dwindling like the dinosaurs God put on Earth alongside humans 6,000 years ago before he mysteriously decided to take them away. (And who cut them out of Genesis?) “Our best estimate is that 2024 will be the first election where we have an electorate that is less than majority white and Christian,” Jones says.

I highly recommend reading the full piece over at Newsweek.
