Discrimination Turns Into A Sweet Deal For Sweet Cakes Owners

Melissa and Aaron Klein of “Sweet Cakes by Melissa”

So it turns out, for the second time this year, if you go public with your anti-gay animus you can clean up financially with crowd-sourcing campaigns.

The owners of Oregon bakery Sweet Cakes by Melissa, who refused to make a wedding cake for a lesbian couple, were found guilty of violating state public accommodation laws and fined $135,000.

But don’t worry about owners Aaron and Melissa Klein – they won’t feel the pinch even a little bit with that fine. Anti-gay haters across the country pitched in to contribute a whopping $355,500 to the Kleins via a campaign at Continue To Give.

This is after GoFundMe closed an earlier campaign that raised over $110,000 – WHICH the anti-gay bakers get to keep.

So, all in all, for discriminating against a same-sex wedding, the Kleins rake in over $462,000; more than triple the fine.

Watch The Pilot For New Web Series Alphabet Boys

Regular readers of The Randy Report know I’m a huge fan of web series.

Episodes are usually 15 minutes or less – great for my short attention span. And, the folks involved have the freedom to tell the stories they want to tell without network suits interfering in the process.

Web series are the playground of the next generation of TV and film creators.

Some really talented folks are in the process of getting ready to shoot their web series Alphabet Boys, which they describe as the Golden Girls meets Sex and the City meets Looking.

We plan to produce a cutting edge web series that is the contemporary brother to classics like “Sex and the City” and “The Golden Girls” by introducing several characters to the forefront of episodic storytelling, some of whom just happen to be gay. It’s simply a part of who they are, not what they are. What makes this show unique? These characters are not defined by their sexuality, be it gay or straight. They’ll draw you in with their personality, character and individual perspectives on life.

Alphabet Boys is a bold and fresh comedic web-series revolving around four guys navigating the struggles of life in the Big Apple: Love, friendship and finding the ever-elusive Mr. Right. The show takes place in Alphabet City, where Dante, Blake and Ross suddenly find themselves with a new house-guest when Stefano shows up at their door. Three gay men under one roof is dramatic enough, but add a straight one with extra baggage to the mix and you have Season One of Alphabet Boys!

This season brings fun filled shenanigans during excursions through the city, pool parties, broadway shows, bad dates and personal drama between the boys. With complementary, yet completely opposite personalities, there’s never a dull moment with these four!

Check out the pilot for the project below:

The creative team has launched a crowd-sourcing campaign to raise funds for the first season. Head over to Indiegogo to check out their pitch.

I’ve donated to several crowd-sourcing projects and always glad I did. From films to web series to recording projects, you become not only a backer of the project, but you go along for the ride as those funded keep you informed of the project’s progress through updates both before and after completion.

For a small contribution (or large if you’re feeling it) you get to be a movie, television or record producer and be involved in the creative process.

I like the premise of Alphabet Boys, and the folks involved all have excellent pedigrees. Just an example: one of the principals, Joey Sorge, is a buddy of mine with a resume an arm long including tons of Broadway credits (Follies, Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Drowsy Chaperone, How To Succeed…, Nice Work If You Can Get It). These folks aren’t beginners 🙂

I like seeing my friends’ success, so I’m happy to share this project with you shiny, happy people.

Help “Where The Bears Are” Get To Season Four

One of my favorite web series – Where The Bears Are – is approaching the final week of their crowd-sourcing campaign to help fund the upcoming 4th season of the award-winning series. So, I wanted to give a quick shout-out to my favorite fun and furry Bears.

I’ve been watching the series since the very first episode of Season 1. Described as “The Golden Girls” meets “Murder, She Wrote” but with big, hairy, gay men, the guys at WTBA take the comedy and furry fun furr-ther and furr-ther with each new season.

Here’s a synopsis of what the Bears have in store for Season 4:

Season 4 will thrust Reggie, Wood, Nelson and Todd into yet another thrilling murder mystery surrounding the upcoming nuptials of everyone’s favorite bear couple, Nelson and Todd!

At the same time, Reggie’s true crime TV show becomes a hit on the Inquisitive Channel and sparks begin to fly because of his new co-stars Det. Chad Winters and Captain Coley.

Meanwhile, Wood decides to start his own swimwear line called “Sporting Wood” with sidekick George Ridgemont which provides them the opportunity to audition, dress and photograph hot bear models for a living!

All while Nelson and Todd plan for the wedding of the century which is most sure to go awry! Season 4 will feature the usual parade of hot, sexy, hairy men that fans adore, the hilarious comedy everyone expects from the show, and a nail-biting climax that the show if famous for!

As I mention on The Randy Report often, I love web series. The short episodes (short attention span here), the creative spirit, and the ability to watch whenever you want makes it all fun.

And when you fund a project – and I have many times – you feel a part of the whole community of the show.

So – enough chit-chat. Take a look at the Bears’ Kickstarter video below and, if you feel it, contribute something to Season 4 of Where The Bears Are.
