Santa Fe mayoral candidate Javier Gonzalez comes out

Javier Gonzalez, a former state Democratic Party chairman, former Santa Fe County commissioner, and current Santa Fe mayoral candidate, came out of the closet in a blog post on Wednesday.

Wrote Gonzalez, in part:

When a Bishop named Jorge from Buenos Aires took the name Francis, he made an immediate connection with Santa Fe. But when Pope Francis visited Brazil recently, he spoke directly to me, when he said, “who am I to judge?”

You see, when you come from a traditional family with deep roots in this community, the process of accepting that you are gay is complicated with fears about disappointing those you love, or becoming disconnected with a sense of place that is as much a part of me as my sexuality.

Growing up in this town, I felt myself fully embraced by la herencia, the traditional ways that defined the history of Santa Fe. Much of it is beautiful, a celebration of family, a spirit of community, a sense of obligation to those who came before us and responsibility to those who come after us. Knowing you are a part of a continuum gives a young person a sense of place and a sense of pride. These are all gifts I hope to pass on to my two daughters.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that the reaction to his coming out was well received by followers on social media.

“Based on the reaction today, it reflects the beauty of our families in Northern New Mexico to accept our sons and daughters for who they are,” Gonzales said, adding that it’s shown him “it is important for people to step out and to stand up and be proud of who they are and to be able to share it with their community.”

Gonzalez is one of two openly gay candidates for the office of mayor, and supports legalization of same-sex marriage.

Wentworth Miller of Prison Break comes out

The handsome Wentworth Miller (of Prison Break fame) came out in a letter to the St. Petersburg International Film Festival, declining their invitation to attend as the “Guest of Honor.”

See what he had to say:

“Re: St. Petersburg International Film Festival / “Guest of Honor” Invitation

Dear Ms. Averbakh:

Thank you for your kind invitation. As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes.

However, as a gay man, I must decline.

I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government. The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.

Perhaps, when and if circumstances improve, I’ll be free to make a different choice.

Until then.

Miller immediately received support from GLAAD, who says via spokesperson Wilson Cruz:

“Wentworth’s bold show of support sends a powerful message to LGBT Russians, who are facing extreme violence and persecution: you are not alone. As people from across the globe continue to speak out against Russia’s horrific law, more celebrities and corporations should follow his courageous lead in openly condemning Russia’s anti-LGBT law.”

Redskins QB Robert Griffin III: Now is the time for NFL players to come out

“Yeah, man. I think there are [gay players] right now, and if they’re looking for a window to just come out, I mean, now is the window. My view on it is, yes, I am a Christian, but to each his own. You do what you want to do. If some Christians want to look at being gay as a sin, then thinking about other women, committing adultery — or any of those other sins that are in the Bible — those are sins, too. And God looks at all of us the same way.”

– Robert Griffin III, discussing the growing sense an active NFL player will come out of the closet in the near future, in an interview with GQ

In response to WWE’s Darren Young coming out

John Cena shirtless, Darren Young shirtless
John Cena (L) Darren Young (R)

The WWE has issued a statement to GLAAD regarding Darren Young coming out: “WWE is proud of Darren Young for being open about his sexuality, and we will continue to support him as a WWE Superstar. Today, in fact, Darren will be participating in one of our Be A Star anti-bullying rallies in Los Angeles to teach children how to create positive environments for everyone regardless of age, race, religion or sexual orientation.”

WWE superstar John Cena applauds:  “Good for him. That’s fantastic. I know Darren personally. Darren’s a great guy. That’s a very bold move for him. And congratulations for him for actually finally doing it. It’s all about being professional, and Darren Young is a consummate professional. For us, it’s entertainment, and if you’re entertaining you shouldn’t be judged by race, creed, color or sexuality … as long as you’re entertaining.”

WWE superstar Darren Young comes out

TMZ has the scoop:

WWE superstar Darren Young just dropped a bombshell, telling TMZ, he’s gay … and no, this isn’t part of the act.

Darren was at LAX Wednesday when we asked whether a gay wrestler could succeed in WWE, and Darren laughed, saying, “Absolutely. Look at me. I’m a WWE superstar and to be honest with you, I’ll tell you right now, I’m gay. And I’m happy. I’m very happy.”

For the record, Darren is now the first openly gay wrestler ever at WWE … and the first headlining wrestler ever to come out while still signed to a major promotion.

Other pro wrestlers have been rumored to be gay, but that’s it … just rumors.

Bottom line: this is big, big news. For all its chauvinism and testosterone-driven bravado, coming out in WWE is tantamount to coming out in the NFL.

Raven-Symone of “Cosby Show” fame comes out

Raven-Symone of “The Cosby Show” and “That’s So Raven” fame has come out:

“I can finally get married! Yay government! So proud of you,” she tweeted.

There have been rumors about the former Cosby kid’s sexuality for sometime. Last year, the National Inquirer published a story that she was a lesbian and living with her girlfriend AzMarie Livingston.

In May of 2012 the That’s So Raven star tweeted, “I’m living my personal life the way I’m happiest. I’m not one… to disclose who I’m dating. And I shall not start now. My sexual orientation is mine, and the person I’m dating, to know.”

Australian campaign to fight bullying and homophobia – “Year 7 Self”

Minus18 is Australia’s largest support network for gay, bisexual, lesbian and trans teenagers from all over Australia.

Minus18 has begun a new campaign called “Year 7 Self” that features heterosexual Aussies talking to their 7 year old selves regarding regret over not being more supportive of their LGBT friends who came out, and the value of those friendships as they grew older.

As the  Year 7 Self website states, “Just because we’re straight, doesn’t mean we have to be narrow. You might not know it now, but you’re going to have people in your life who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans… And that’s a pretty awesome thing.”

Robbie Rogers talks to MTV about coming out

Robbie Rogers recently visited the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center, where he chatted with MTV Act  about his decision to come out publicly.

Hearing homophobic rantings when he was young, not directed towards him, made coming out seem like something he’d never do. However, after he told his family last October via Skype, he describes coming out as “the best feeling” he’s ever had.

“Now for the first time in my life, everything’s normal”

Rogers also talked about activism, saying that everyone has reached out to him to tie his name to different charities. He said he “wanted to do something that is bigger than homophobia and bigger than sports.”

With his new motivational campaign, Beyond It, Rogers plans to move “beyond” stereotypes in homophobia, sexism, disabilities, and racism. Beyond It will launch at the end of July.

The athlete also shared that he thinks opponents of marriage equality and allowing openly gay men to serve as leaders in the Boy Scouts will soon be embarrassed about their opinions. Watch him discuss below.

Chandler Massey wins 2nd Daytime Emmy for “coming out” storyline on Days Of Our Lives

Chandler Massey snatched his second consecutive Outstanding Young Actor Daytime Emmy for his role as gay teen Will Horton on Days of Our Lives on Sunday.

He beat out his on-air boyfriend Sonny Kiriakis, played by Freddie Smith, who Massey called a “phenomenal” actor and person. Massey’s win last year marked the first time an actor won for portraying a gay character, while this year he won for Will Horton’s coming-out storyline, seen above.

Visibility of gay characters helps improve the support the LGBT community receives from the rest of the world.  An Ipsos poll for Reuters shows in countries and communities where people knew someone gay, support was higher and more broad.  In countries where gays and lesbians hide due to shame or fear, acceptance dropped dramatically.

Texas: High school salutatorian comes out in graduation speech to friends, family

From KTEM.com:

During his senior year, Belton High School’s 2013 Salutatorian Mitch Anderson had a GPA of 112.2, and scored a perfect PSAT score in his junior year. He said when he found out he would be the senior class salutatorian, he immediately began thinking about what he would say to his graduating class. He decided to “come out” at his high school graduation in his salutatorian speech, a decision Anderson said “felt natural.”

The ceremony took place at the Bell County Expo, in Belton on Thursday, with the largest graduating class in Belton High School’s history. But Anderson said he was intimidated by the crowd.

“Once I got up there and stared talking, I felt completely fine,” Anderson said of Thursday’s night speech at the Bell County Expo. He said he told no one of his plans to come out during the speech.

In his speech, Anderson addressed his struggles with coming out and finding acceptance with who he is.

“I myself am guilty of self-doubt, relying on others to give my life definition,” he said in his speech, “But that time has passed, and I feel the moment has arrived for me to be publicly true to my personal identity. So now, I can say, I’m gay. It is both a significant portion of who I am and an inconsequential aspect. It’s as natural and effortless to me as breathing. I couldn’t change myself even if I wanted, and believe me, I have.

He said no one, not even his parents and close friends, knew he was gay prior to the speech. So far, the teenager said reaction has been positive.

“I’ve received so much support and kindness,” Anderson said of fellow classmates and others. “Knowing that [people] found the speech inspirational has been really amazing.”

As for what inspired him to come out, Anderson said pop culture icons such as Madonna, Lady Gaga and Star Trek star Zacharay Quinto all played a role in helping him feel confident about his identity.

“They are all about standing up for who you are, being different, being unique,” he said. “They’ve gotten strong positive reception for their [actions].”

Anderson said he was aware of some negative reaction directed towards the speech, mostly posted on various community Internet message boards. Some expressed that it was wrong for the student to use the opportunity to make the speech about himself. Anderson noted that Valedictorian Jacob deKeratry also spoke about his own personal experiences as a teenager.

“I didn’t make the speech all about me,” he said. “It’s about acceptance, about celebrating everyone.”
