Hypocrisy, thy name is Tony Perkins

On Tony Perkins’ daily “Christian” radio show, hate group leader Tony Perkins urged his listeners to join NOM’s sadly misguided failure of a boycott of General Mills.

Why, you ask?

Because Betty Crocker has the nerve to donate wedding cakes to same-sex weddings:

At Betty Crocker, the only thing they’re mixing up is their priorities.

Hi, I’m Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council in Washington, D.C.

If you ask conservatives, Betty Crocker’s latest promotion is a recipe for disaster. This summer, the famous dessert line decided to jump on the same-sex “marriage” bandwagon-and bring cakes to celebrate.

In Minnesota, where parent company General Mills is headquartered, Betty Crocker decided to donate wedding cakes to the first homosexual couples who exchanged vows on the first day that counterfeit marriage was legal. “Betty celebrates all families,” said manager Laura Forero. “We don’t want to be old fashioned,” the company explained.

Unfortunately for General Mills, the majority of Americans think natural marriage is anything but old fashioned. And they’ve made it tough on companies like Target, Starbucks, and JC Penney who disagree. Know where your money is going.

When you’re at the store, think outside the Betty Crocker box! For a full list of products that are undermining marriage, check out DumpGeneralMills.com.

First of all – when it comes to a majority of Americans, multiple recent pools show Americans support marriage equality:

• an ABC News/Washington Post poll found that 55 percent of Americans say they support the right of same-sex couples to legally tie the knot
• An NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released in April found that 53 percent of Americans favored allowing same-sex marriages
• 52 percent of respondents in a new Gallup Politics poll would support a law that would legalize same-sex marriage across all 50 U.S. states

You know, the anti-gay Christian groups love to start these boycotts over things they don’t like or find “icky.” And when they do it’s “good and true” in the name of morality, marriage and protecting the children.

BUT – when LGBT groups boycott over bigotry, suddenly the use of a boycott is “intolerant,” “bullying,” and “intimidation” as we are clearly trying to shut down someone’s First Amendment rights.

Got that? When we do it – we’re the bad guys.  When they do it, they’re the good guys.

Riiiight….

Boycott fail – American Family Association claims “victory” over Home Depot after stock triples in value

American Family Association president Tim Wildmon is claiming victory in terms of a boycott of Home Depot – despite the fact that Home Depot’s stock value has more than tripled since AFA’s so-called boycott began:

“I’m glad to report to you that we are suspending the boycott of Home Depot.

After monitoring the company for several months, AFA is satisfied the company has withdrawn its major financial contributions to gay activist groups and events. I truly believe this is a direct result of your willingness to become involved.

In fact, more than 750,000 people signed the Boycott Home Depot Pledge.

Although Home Depot has made changes, we will continue to monitor their behavior. We suspect Home Depot will publicly deny having made changes, but their actions speak louder than words. Your AFA will continue to challenge major U.S. companies to remain neutral in the culture wars rather than to use their resources to promote anti-family issues.

Thank you for standing with us. Our efforts are making a difference!”

Think Progress has a statement from Home Depot:

“We haven’t made any changes to our policies for inclusion and respect of all people, regardless of their sexual orientation. We have not directed our associates to discontinue participation in Pride or other community events, and have no intention of doing so.”

President Obama opposes Sochi Olympic boycott

“I know that one question that’s been raised is how do we approach the Olympics. I want to just make very clear right now I do not think it’s appropriate to boycott the Olympics. We’ve got a bunch of Americans out there who are training hard, who are doing everything they can to succeed. Nobody’s more offended than me by some of the anti-gay and lesbian legislation that you’ve been seeing in Russia.

“But as I said just this week, I’ve spoken out against that, not just with respect to Russia, but a number of other countries where we continue to do work with them but we have a strong disagreement on this issue.

“And one of the things I’m really looking forward to is maybe some gay and lesbian athletes bringing home the gold or silver or bronze, which I think would go a long way in rejecting the kind of attitudes that we’re seeing there. If Russia doesn’t have gay or lesbian athletes, it will probably make their team weaker.” – President Obama, speaking yesterday at a press conference.  Watch video via TPM below.

Greg Louganis – “Don’t boycott the Sochi Olympics”

Four-time Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis has written an op-ed piece in which he strenuously objects to a boycott of the Sochi Olympics:

Boycotting sends the wrong message and will only harm the hard-working athletes set to compete in the 2014 Olympics, not the Russian government itself.

I know from personal experience. My first Olympics I won Silver at age 16, and then in 1980, at the height of my diving career, President Jimmy Carter opted to boycott the 1980 Olympics in Moscow as a method of protesting the Soviet invasion in Afghanistan. The toll on fellow athletes and me was devastating. We had trained our entire lives for that one moment.

Fortunately, I was lucky enough to continue my diving career and return to compete and win two gold medals in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles (an Olympics the Eastern Block counties boycotted) and repeat two gold medals in 1988 Olympics in Seoul. But, other athletes were not so lucky. Some of those who missed the 1980 games never had another chance to shine.

This boycott hurt the wrong people, taking a toll on prominent athletes more than the country it targeted. I’m concerned the same would be true today. There are far too many athletes for whom the 2014 Sochi Olympics represents their only chance at success. A boycott will only hurt these athletes’ careers.

An Open Letter from the CEO of Stolichnaya Vodka to the LGBT community

The CEO of Stolichnaya Vodka issued a statement today in an effort to tamp down a possible boycott of the company’s product in protest of recent anti-gay legislation in Russia:

The recent dreadful actions taken by the Russian Government limiting the rights of the LGBT community and the passionate reaction of the community have prompted me to write this letter to you.

I want to stress that Stoli firmly opposes such attitude and actions. Indeed, as a company that encourages transparency and fairness, we are upset and angry. Stolichnaya Vodka has always been, and continues to be a fervent supporter and friend to the LGBT community. We also thank the community for having adopted Stoli as their vodka of preference.

In the US, the brand’s commitment to the LGBT community has been ongoing for years. Among the best examples, I can cite the series produced by Stoli in 2006 called “Be Real: Stories from Queer America” which featured short documentaries on real life stories depicting the challenges and accomplishments of the LGBT community in the United States (http://www.logotv.com/shows/dyn/be_real_series/series.jhtml)

Stoli is very proud of its current exclusive national partnership with Gaycities.com and Queerty.com in search of the Most Original Stoli Guy. This is a fantastic program that started as a local initiative in Colorado and became a national platform. Previous national initiatives included serving as the official vodka of the Miami Gay Pride Week as well as ongoing events with focus on Pride month.

[snip]

We fully support and endorse your objectives to fight against prejudice in Russia. In the past decade, SPI has been actively advocating in favor of freedom, tolerance and openness in society, standing very passionately on the side of the LGBT community and will continue to support any effective initiative in that direction.

Sincerely yours

Val Mendeleev

Queer Nation urges boycott of Russian vodka

graphic by Gilbert Baker

Queer Nation is urging a boycott of Russian vodka (since we all know how much vodka the gay community consumes). Via email:

In light of the Putin regime’s attacks on the LGBT community, Queer Nation is calling for a worldwide boycott of Russian vodka.

Do not buy or drink Russian vodka: Brands include Russian Standard and Stolichnaya.

Demand that bar owners do not buy or serve Russian vodka.

Ask your favorite club promoters, DJs, and entertainers to insist that Russian brands are not served in the venues in which they perform.

It’s time to target Russia. Dump Russian vodka! Queer Nation is asking that consumers worldwide dump Russian vodka.

Queer Nation expects to have additional actions that the LGBT community can take to make one message clear — violence against the LGBT community anywhere will be met with swift and direct action.

Pastor buys Starbucks coffee then pours it out to “boycott” Starbucks

From the YouTube description – “Pastor Bob Enyart of Denver Bible Church joins DumpStarbucks.com by pouring his Venti (20 oz) Pike blend down a Colorado sewer because the company is trying to undermine the teach of Jesus Christ that God made us male and female at the beginning of creation.”

Please note – Boycott 101: Don’t buy the product of the company you’re boycotting.

Take a few minutes and sit with that.

We appreciate you supporting Starbucks and their inclusive policies. Thank you.
