Ben Cohen: “Straight people don’t get it”

Rugby superstar turned equality activist Ben Cohen says that a lot of straight people don’t get why he’s fighting antigay bullying and discrimination, in a new interview with NBC Miami.

Cohen, who is straight and the 10th highest point scorer in England rugby history, retired from the sport to create the Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation, which raises awareness for the long-term effects of bullying. Cohen says he was inspired to create the foundation after his father was killed trying to break up a fight in a nightclub.

Cohen reveals, “A lot of straight people have asked, ‘Why are you doing this?’ I just explain that it really is just to break down stereotypes. I knew I would be able to speak to both the gay and straight community and maybe reach a few different groups of people. I just want people to know that how you treat others is how you should want to be treated yourself. Random acts of kindness are simple.”

Ben Cohen – Face To Face video

The English rugby player chats with Out about his new anti-bullying StandUp Foundation.

The Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation, Inc. is the world’s first foundation dedicated to raising awareness of the long-term, damaging effects of bullying, and funding those doing real-world work to stop it. We stand up against bullying regardless of to whom it happens. Because lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people are often targeted by bullies, we give particular attention to this community. We include removing homophobia from sports as central to our mission.

Ben Cohen, MBE, is an England Rugby World Cup champion, and among the world’s greatest athletes. He ranks second in all-time scoring for England, and first among straight professional athletes to focus his philanthropic efforts for the benefit of the LGBT community.

In case readers haven’t noticed, I’m a big fan of Ben Cohen. He is an amazing and beautiful man inside and out.

The LGBT community has a great ally in Ben Cohen.

Ben Cohen in Out Magazine: Action Man

From Out.com: In an emotional piece for Out.com, Ben Cohen talks for the first time about how the death of his father, the victim of a bar fight, has led to his foundation to stop anti-gay bullying. It’s a powerful piece that underscores how deep and in how many different ways violence and bullying affect us all.

Ben Cohen strips in public – photo shoot

Uber popular UK rugby star and gay rights champion Ben Cohen recently took these pics getting his taking his clothes off to promote Hilton Hotels Great Getaway Promotion.

Ben led a flashmob onto the Millenium Bridge in London where they proceeded to disrobe down to their underwear. Of course the real question is, why didn’t Ben do this when he was in the US?

(I know, I know… any reason is a good reason to post a picture of Ben…)
