Hater Of The Day: Mat Staver Calls White House Rainbow Lights “Cloak Of Shame”

After the White House celebrated the historic same-sex marriage ruling from SCOTUS by lighting the White House in rainbow colors, hate group leader Mat Staver had this to say today on Christian radio:

“It’s unprecedented in American history that the president of the United States would be so in-your-face immoral and impose that immorality and sin on the rest of the country. I wept when I saw that and thought about what a horrible example that is to the rest of the world. I just felt shameful to be an American at that point in time, that this is my country and look what my country has come to. The president of the United States has put the cloak of sin over the White House, the cloak of shame over the White House.”

Seriously, folks. A rainbow – a symbol of diversity and unity – made this man weep.

Staver was so upset that more Americans now have equal rights he felt “shameful to be an American.”

Now, is that screwed up or what?

Viral Video: Kentucky County Clerk Denies Gay Couple Marriage License

A video has surfaced on YouTube which apparently shows two men being denied a marriage license in Morehead, Kentucky by Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis.

When the couple is finally allowed to approach the counter, they present copies of the recent Supreme Court decision as well as Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear’s executive order requiring all county clerks to issue marriage licenses.

The employees are unmoved by this evidence and continue to deny the couple their marriage license. A woman presumed to be Clerk Davis finally appears at 11:12 in the video, and she begins her interaction with the couple by asking one of the female supporters recording the encounter to “put your phone away”.

The supporter responds by saying “This is his right to have this filmed as well”. Ms. Davis continues to insist that the supporter stop filming, and she apparently complies since that is where the tape ends.

The ACLU is now suing Ms. Davis for failure to carry out her duties.

ACLU of Kentucky Cooperating Attorney Laura Landenwich said in a statement, “Ms. Davis has the absolute right to believe whatever she wants about God, faith, and religion, but as a government official who swore an oath to uphold the law, she cannot pick and choose who she is going to serve, or which duties her office will perform based on her religious beliefs.”

UPDATE: I think it’s worth noting that Ms. Davis’ “deeply held religious beliefs” apparently only affect her views on gays. With regard to the sanctity of marriage, it’s become public knowledge that Davis is currently on her FOURTH marriage.

I don’t judge the three failed marriages, but since divorce is frowned upon in the Bible I wonder why Davis doesn’t address her own life’s challenges before she denies couples a marriage license.

Clearly Davis knows how to fill out the paperwork considering her own four licenses…

Author Of “Kill The Gays” Bill In California Tries For Constitutional Amendment

Matt McLaughlin, author of the proposed (now dead) “Sodomite Suppression Act” in California, has come back with a new tactic to try and legalize killing gays with “bullets to the head.”

Instead of a law, his new approach is to file the idea as a constitutional amendment, which he thought she would have to clear for signature gathering.

And he still doesn’t see anything wrong with his idea. He says being gay has been a crime for centuries.

Kamala Harris, California Attorney General, had this to say: “Anyone who will take up their own time, or anyone else’s time, advocating for murder of innocent people in a way that is so fueled by bigotry and hate is someone whose intelligence we should question.”

Sen Ted Cruz Says SCOTUS Marriage Ruling Only Affects Four States

Sen. Ted Cruz erroneously says the recently SCOTUS ruling on marriage only applies to four states.

From Politico:

“Those who are not parties to the suit are not bound by it,” the Texas Republican told NPR News’ Steve Inskeep in an interview published on Monday.

Since only suits against the states of Ohio, Tennessee, Michigan and Kentucky were specifically considered in the Supreme Court’s Obergefell v. Hodges decision, which was handed down last Friday, Cruz — a former Supreme Court clerk — believes that other states with gay marriage bans need not comply, absent a judicial order.

“On a great many issues, others have largely acquiesced, even if they were not parties to the case,” the 2016 presidential contender added, “but there’s no legal obligation to acquiesce to anything other than a court judgement.”

While Cruz’s statement may be technically true, federal district and circuit courts are obligated to follow the Supreme Court’s precedent and overrule all other states’ same-sex marriage bans as unconstitutional.

Clearly Ted Cruz has no firm grasp of legal precedent.

While the decision on same-sex marriage addressed four states, that ruling becomes controlling precedent for all other courts to follow on the issue from here on forward.

If Cruz wants to force gay and lesbian couples to go through the time and expense to file lawsuits which WILL end up with a judgement in favor of same-sex marriage, he can I guess. But the result will be the same whether states go through the lawsuits or not. At the end of the day, any judge will have to cite the SCOTUS ruling and marriage equality will prevail.

Period.

NOM Still Begging For Money

Brian Brown of NOM

The anti-same-sex marriage group, National Organization for Marriage, is now officially dying “the ugly death.”

The head of the group – Bryan Brown – sends out this money beg today via email, trying desperately to hang on to his six figure salary for a job that is now woefully obsolete.

You see, Brown and his bigoted cronies have “other elements of our plan to go forward,” he just won’t tell you what they are.

“If you believe that our next President of the United States must be a champion for true marriage, then we ask you to donate today so that we can make this a reality in the future.

“There are other elements of our plan to go forward, and I will discuss these in future communications.

“For now, rest assured that NOM is in this fight for the long haul, and we trust you will be there with us. This is a dark day, but we are not defeated.

“Indeed, we have been reenergized and are more determined than ever to reverse this injustice and restore God’s institution of marriage to its proper place in American law and culture. Our opponents are now counting on you to give up, and so is a majority of the US Supreme Court.

“Remember it was Justice Ginsburg who violated judicial ethics to comment publicly that the American people will easily accept this illegitimate decision. Please act today to prove her wrong!

“Your contribution of $25, $50, $100, $500 or $1,000 or more will be an investment in the next phase of this struggle and allow us to begin to fight back and ultimately reverse this terrible decision.”

Folks have reached out asking if the haters can reverse the Supreme Court’s historic ruling.

Basically, that would need the haters to pass a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

THAT would require either a two-thirds majority vote in both houses of Congress OR a two-thirds vote by a national convention of states (that would be 34 today) OR by a total of three-fourths (38) of the individual state legislatures ratifying said amendment.

NOT gonna happen.

Franklin Graham Rants On LGBT Progress, Blames Obama

Franklin Graham, son of Billy Graham, took to Facebook with an anti-gay rant about the progress of attitudes towards LGBTs in America, blaming President Obama for the “moral decline we are seeing manifest daily:”

“President Barack Obama was right about one thing in the speech he gave at a Gay Pride event he hosted in the White House yesterday. He said, ‘There has been an incredible shift in attitudes across the country.’ That’s true—but it is definitely not a shift for the good of America. The shift in attitudes he refers to is the moral decline we are seeing manifest daily around us. Accepting wrong as right—accepting sin as something to be proud of. Yes, that’s definitely a shift. Should we be surprised that he thanked the LGBT community for all that they had helped him accomplish during his time as president? He said, ‘A lot of what we’ve accomplished over these last six and a half years has been because of you.’ He also noted there were two states where gay marriage was legal when he took office, but now there are 37. The President is leading this nation on a sinful course, and God will judge him and us as a nation if we don’t repent.”

The Facts About Gov. Bobby Jindal

Now that Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal has officially announced his candidacy for the 2016 GOP nomination for president, the Human Rights Campaign wants to remind of some facts regarding Mr. Jindal:

Throughout his political career, Bobby Jindal has routinely opposed efforts to move toward LGBT equality, and he’s bragged that he was not a politician who was going to change his anti-LGBT positions based on “polling.”

He’s even worked against existing Louisiana protections that protected LGBT workers from discrimination.

Maryland DJ Refuses To Provide Services For Gay Man’s 60th Birthday Party

(Graphic via Washington Post)

Well, this will get interesting.

First we had wedding photographers and bakeries refusing to provide services for same-sex weddings based on “sincerely held religious beliefs.” Same-sex marriage was a bridge too far for those folks, and they could not see themselves as “participating” in a same-sex wedding.

Now, however, a Maryland DJ has refused to work at a birthday party being thrown for a 60 year old gay man. No wedding. No unions. Just a party where gay people might be.

And Ultrasound Deejays has a written company policy stating, “we will not be involved in any event involving homosexual celebration or activity. We follow biblical morality.”

More from the Washington Post:

The national debate about how to balance religious conscience protections and gay equality flared in the large, mostly liberal Washington, D.C., suburb of Montgomery County Friday, when Dani Tsakounis tried to help her brother hire Ultrasound Deejays for a party. An owner of the business told Tsakounis he would not provide the DJ because Tsakounis’s brother, a Silver Spring therapist, is married to another man and the birthday party they are hosting is for their 60-year-old roommate, who is also gay.

“I just said, ‘We won’t be able to do it, we’re a Christian organization and it would go against our faith, I’m sorry,’” Michael Lampiris, co-owner of Ultrasound Deejays, said Friday.

Tom Tsakounis, 46, was so upset when his sister told him that he posted the news on his neighborhood listserv, prompting calls of sympathy from neighbors. He also registered a complaint with the Montgomery County Human Rights Commission, which hears cases of alleged discrimination.

Maryland state law has banned discrimination based on sexual orientation in public accommodation — which includes businesses “offering goods, services, entertainment” the law says — since 2001.

The article goes on to say that Lampiris admits that he’s turned down bridal parties just because he heard lesbians might be attending.

According to reports, Lampiris didn’t sound very concerned about breaking the law, though, stating, “We ought to obey God rather than men.”
