Alec Baldwin to host new MSNBC show

Word comes from senior sources at MSNBC that Alec Baldwin (seven seasons for NBC’s 30 Rock; frequent host of SNL) will get his own weekly show on the progressive news channel.

From Mediaite:

According to our source, the so far untitled show will air Fridays at 10 p.m. ET and will feature a large dose of Baldwin’s outspoken liberal politics.

The MSNBC 10 p.m. hour is currently occupied by Lawrence O’Donnell, but only Monday through Thursday. As such, this new Baldwin show will not replace any of the network’s primetime talk shows — just the Lockup prison documentary series that airs Friday evenings.

Our source insists its a done deal but there is no question MSNBC is not quite prepared for an announcement. Yet.

For a bit of foreshadowing, perhaps, check out the video below with Alec Baldwin reading teasers for Lawrence O’Donnell in May of 2012. Perhaps the idea for his own show has been in development going all the way back to last spring?

Alec Baldwin vs Anderson Cooper

Alec Baldwin, while on Howard Stern discussing the controversy around his calling a Daily Mail reporter a “toxic little queen,” took aim at Anderson Cooper for posting the following tweet in response to his choice of words:

“Why does #AlecBaldwin get a pass when he uses gay slurs? If a conservative talked of beating up a “queen” they would be vilified.”

Said Baldwin:

“Anderson Cooper has a job to do. And that job is to try to reinforce his credibility in the gay community after the fact that you couldn’t get him out of the closet for 10 years with a canister of tear gas. Now he’s the sheriff. Now he’s running around writing everybody a ticket!”

Alec Baldwin deletes Twitter account after epic rant on UK press

Alec Baldwin apparently deleted his entire Twitter account after an epic Twitter rant against a Daily Mail reporter in which he characterized the reporter as a “toxic little queen” and threatened to “f**k [him] up” by inserting foot into said reporter’s ass.

Gawker reports that the meltdown happened after the Daily Mail published a report that Baldwin’s wife had tweeted throughout Gandolfini’s funeral service.

UPDATE – Alec Baldwin has given this statement to Gothamist:

“The idea of me calling this guy a ‘queen’ and that being something that people thought is homophobic, a queen to me has a different meaning. It’s somebody who’s just above. It doesn’t have any necessarily sexual connotations.

“To me a queen – I know women that act queeny, I know men that are straight that act queeny, and I know gay men that act queeny. It doesn’t have to be a definite sexual connotation, or a homophobic connotation. To me those are people who think the rules don’t apply to them.

“This guy could blatantly lie, I mean blatantly lie about my wife on the internet and there are just no rules that apply to him, but that’s outrageous to me.”

ORPHANS starring Alec Baldwin to close on Broadway

The producers of the Tony Award-nominated play ORPHANS have announced that the Broadway production will play its final performance on SUNDAY, MAY 19 after 27 previews and 37 regular performances at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre.

The production began performances on March 26 and opened on April 18. The Broadway production of Lyle Kessler’s ORPHANS stars Alec Baldwin, Ben Foster and Tom Sturridge and is directed by Daniel Sullivan.

ORPHANS has received several accolades including Tony Nominations for Best Leading Actor Tom Sturridge and Best Revival of a Play. Additionally Sturridge has been nominated for an Outer Critics Circle Award and a Drama League Award. Alec Baldwin has been nominated for a Drama League Award and the production was also nominated for Outstanding Revival of a Play by the Outer Critics Circle.

To be honest, I’m very surprised with the nominations and Alec Baldwin’s star power the play can’t seem to continue. I’m a fan of all three of the play’s stars.
