Gallup: Support For Same-Sex Marriage Near Record High

The latest polling from Gallup shows 69% of Americans support same-sex couples’ right to marry – a near-record high. The same survey also indicates 64% see gay/lesbian relations as “morally acceptable.”

From Gallup:

The recent halt in the long-term upward trend in both indicators of public support for the LGBTQ+ community reflects Democrats’ and independents’ support leveling off, while Republicans’ has dipped slightly.

The latest 69% of Americans who support legal same-sex marriage, from Gallup’s May 1-23 Values and Beliefs poll, is statistically similar to the record high of 71% recorded in 2022 and 2023.

When Gallup first polled about same-sex marriage in 1996, 27% of Americans thought such unions should be legal, and 68% said they should not.

By 2004, 42% were in favor, and in 2011, support crossed the majority level for the first time. After registering slightly lower in two subsequent measures, public support for legal recognition of same-sex unions has remained above 50% consistently since late 2012.

Broken down by political affiliation, 83% of Democrats and 74% of independents support marriage equality, while just 46% of Republicans favor legalized same-sex marriage. When the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade, Justice Clarence Thomas made a point to say Obergefell ruling (which made marriage equality legal across the nation) should be revisited.
